Thales Leites Cut from UFC

Postby keithlewis » Thu Aug 13, 2009 1:26 pm

Thales Leites, who less than four months ago competed for the UFC middleweight title, was given his walking papers in a meeting Wednesday afternoon with the UFC, FanHouse confirmed with a source close to Leites.

Leites (14-3) had exclusively fought for the UFC since The Ultimate Fighter 4 Finale in November 2006, where he lost his promotional debut to Martin Kampmann, but would bounce back with five straight wins to earn a shot against champion Anderson Silva. However, after the two turned out a lackluster and tentative five-round performance, both faced heavy criticism and required a strong follow-up outing to restore their reputation.

In a clear response to the protest of hardcore fans, fighters Tamdan McCrory and Thales Leites have reportedly been reinstated by the UFC.

The news comes via Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports, who spoke with UFC president Dana White on Thursday evening after a day of criticism levied at the Las Vegas promotion for its decision to drop the talented fighters.

McCrory lost a split decision to up-and-comer John Howard last weekend at UFC 101, bringing his UFC record to 3-3. The Cortland, N.Y. based fighter has hinted at a move to middleweight to forgo a huge weight cut at welterweight.

Leites, who contended for Anderson Silva's middleweight title just four months ago at UFC 97, lost a razor-close decision to Alessio Sakara prior to McCrory's fight on the event's undercard.

White told Iole he wasn't aware of the plans to drop the fighters and said he would reverse the action to release them.

McCrory’s manager, Chris Palmquist, told http://www.MMAWeekly.com on Friday, “Verbally, I was notified on Monday that he was going to be released, but I have not received an official release letter (which is usually the case) from the UFC, nor have I been told anything different.”
What do you expect? The comedian is dead.

what the fuck is going on?

It now appears as though the recent report from Kevin Iole over at Yahoo! Sports about Tamdan McCrory and Thales Leites being back in the UFC was nothing but hot air.

According to a recent report on mixedmartialarts.com a represenataive for McCrory has been recently contacted by UFC matchmaker Joe Silva to refute the news of McCrory’s return to the UFC.

Leites also remains ousted from the promotion according to a recent report on MMAJunkie.com.

Apparently UFC President Dana White’s statements were misinterpreted by Iole. The statement quoted by White in the report was, “They won’t be cut”, four short words that would seem to be very difficult to misquote.
