Velasquez talks respect for Big Nog and arrival in UFC

Mostly fighters in the world have the dream of represent their own country in the Olimpic Games, except for Cain Velasquez, who decided not to disput the wrestling competition to perform like a mixed martial artist.


“When I was a wrestler I felt like it was missing something and what was missing was punching” the fighter said to the Brazilian magazine Nocaute (written version).


So far, he has succeeded in his choice. Undefeated with seven victories, being six by technical knockout, the 27 year-old athlete is in his prime and is a real threat in the heavier division of the Ultimate.


With just two professional fights and difficult to get promotions to play in, Velasquez’s manager called Dana White and went to Las Vegas with Cain to try a chance in the biggest organization of the earth.


“I had two fights in my curriculum and wanted to fight for other shows before going to UFC to get more experience” said the Mexican. “But it was very difficult to fight for other promotions, so my manager said ‘we’re not fighting and we can’t wait more time. It’s time to call the UFC.’ He called Dana and made a proposal then we went to Vegas. We took two heavyweight fighters with us and Dana watched me fight with them standing and jiu-jitsu against two other guys. He liked and said I was getting in to the UFC” explained Velasquez.


Known for his amazing takedowns, Cain will face the hardest challenge of his victorius career at UFC 110 on February 22nd 2010, opportunity in which he will headline the event in Australia against Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira.


“It’s going to be a tough fight. Minotauro is one of the best. He is always hard and you cannot never underestimate him. Even while he is losing, always finds a way to invert the situation and finish the bout. I have too much respect for him. I watched The Ultimate Fighter in which he was one of the coaches and I respect him as a person and for the legend he is in this sport.”
