Matt Phinney to Debut at WCF 11 on June 18th

UFC trainer and Golden Gloves Boxing Champion to make MMA Debut at WCF 11 on June 18th


World Championship Fighting today announced that Matt Phinney, a highly touted boxing champion in the Northeast is set to make his MMA debut at WCF 11 in Wilmington, MA on June 18th. Phinney is a two-time Golden Gloves Champion winning in both 2008 and 2010. In 2008 Phinney also captured the USA Boxing's New England Championship.

Phinney is most widely known in the Mixed Martial Arts world as being the trainer for UFC fighter Jorge Rivera as well as for his role as Michael Bisping in the many YouTube video spoofs produced by Rivera's camp in the build-up to Rivera's bout vs Michael Bisping at UFC 127. Phinney is excited for his first MMA fight at WCF 11, "I've been trying to take an MMA fight for a while now, but there aren't many guys looking to take a fight with a first timer with a strong boxing background" said Phinney. "I've had several opponents back out on me, and I'm thankful that a guy like Mike Mason was willing to step up and take the fight. He comes from a really tough team, and I'm excited we can both go in there and get some experience together."

His opponent, Mike Mason, fights out of Lysak MMA & Bestway BJJ under Walt Lysak Jr., who has cornered legends Frank Shamrock at UFC 14, as well as UFC Champion Maurice Smith. Coming from Lysak/Bestway BJJ, Mason will bring a strong grappling pedigree to the fight with Phinney, and will look to nullify Phinney's boxing.
