UFC 153: Silva vs. Bonnar

Postby Keithlewis » Wed Sep 12, 2012 10:43 pm

Just a day after being hit by two major injuries, the UFC 153 card planned for Rio has bounced back with not two but three huge new fights.

Already 2-0 in the UFC at light heavyweight, pound for pound king Anderson Silva will head 20 pounds north once more on Saturday, October 13 to meet former Ultimate Fighter finalist Stephan Bonnar in the new three-round main event of UFC 153 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The news was broken by USA Today on Wednesday evening.

The bout comes on the heels of the injury to featherweight champion Jose Aldo that forced the postponement of the card’s original headliner pitting Aldo against Frankie Edgar.

The UFC 153 card also has a new co-main event, as Brazilian bomber Fabio Maldonado will replace Quinton "Rampage" Jackson against countryman Glover Teixeira. The recent retirement of Jorgen Kruth had bumped Maldonado off September 29th's card in Nottingham,

Also added to the event in Rio de Janeiro is a heavyweight bout between the legendary Minotauro Nogueira and the always-dangerous Dave Herman. UFC officials confirmed that the main card will now boast six bouts.

Brazilian fighter Geronimo dos Santos has been forced off of the UFC 153: Silva vs. Bonnar fight card. UFC officials announced the fighters withdrawal on Thursday, although they did not specify the reason why.

Fighting his way up the ranks on the Brazilian circuit for many years, dos Santos was to have made his Octagon debut against Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 153 on Oct. 13 at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro.

Having mixed results in his early career, dos Santos has been rather busy over the past couple years, fighting 14 times in that two-year span.

He is 13-1 during that time, including winning his last 12 fights, propelling him to his shot in the UFC.

The Brazilian is an explosive fighter with knockout power, but he’ll have to wait a little bit longer to show it in the Octagon.

It was unknown at the time of publication whether or not the UFC would be able to secure a new UFC 153 opponent for Gonzaga.
