Jake Shields vs. Nick Thompson for Elite-XC WW Belt
Jake Shields will face Nick Thompson for the Elite XC welterweight championship. Shields, who has been scheduled to fight for the title twice only to have both dates fall through, will finally get his shot, and in front of a national audience no less.
Showtime and CBS will be holding a combined card in which the Showtime card will lead into the CBS card. No word yet on which fights will be held on which portion of the card, save for the main event between Scott Smith and Robbie Lawler which will be shown on CBS.
Shields and Thompson are riding a combined 21 fight winning streak and each will look to become EliteXC's first welterweight champion.
Shields was originally scheduled to face Drew Fickett for the welterweight title on EliteXC's June 14 card but Fickett dropped out sighting an injury in practice. The organization then learned of Fickett's participation in another event held days before EliteXC's Showtime event. Needless to say, EliteXC was not pleased with Fickett and attempted to contact him directly and through his agent, but to this point they have been unable to reach him.
Therefore, the decision was made to move on without Fickett and his future with the organization is very much in doubt. The feeling is that the organization just can't trust him.
