UFC 87 gets Title Fight; Coleman Injured

The Ultimate Fighting Championship’s initial trip to Minnesota on August 9th just got bigger with today’s signing of the UFC Welterweight Title bout between Champion Georges St-Pierre and number one contender Jon Fitch, which will headline the UFC 87 card at Target Center.

It will be St-Pierre’s first bout since he regained his crown from Matt Serra at UFC 83 on April 19th. In Fitch, he will be facing a former Division I wrestler who has won eight consecutive UFC bouts without a loss, the longest streak in modern-day UFC history.

“He’s a very, very tough guy,” said St-Pierre of Fitch. “I’m gonna have to train hard and be very well prepared because he may be my toughest fight yet.”

“The whole goal is to get the belt and be in the position where guys can’t duck me, run away, or say they don’t want to fight me,” said Fitch. “If I have the belt, there’s no excuse, and if you say you’re the best, then we’re gonna fight. This is gonna be a tough fight, but I’m gonna make sure I’m sharp that night, and wherever the fight needs to go, that’s fine with me.”

In other action on the UFC 87 card, heavyweight sensation Brock Lesnar returns home for a pivotal bout in his rise up the UFC ranks. Lesnar was originally scheduled to face UFC Hall of Famer Mark Coleman on August

Lightweight contenders Kenny Florian and Roger Huerta will also throw down in a highly anticipated bout that may determine a future challenger for the 155-pound crown.

The UFC has been hit with another injury and another card change. Former UFC champion Mark Coleman has withdrawn from his heavyweight bout with former WWE superstar Brock Lesnar scheduled for UFC 87: Seek and Destroy on August 9 at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minn., due to a torn MCL that he suffered in training, UFC.com announced on Thursday.

The injury will not require surgery. To replace the bout, the UFC announced that UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre will defend his crown against Jon Fitch, a former Division I wrestler at Purdue University. GSP is coming off his successful defense of the title against Matt Serra.

St. Pierre will look to snap Fitch's impressive 15-fight win streak, as his last victory was decision over Chris Wilson at UFC 82 last March.

Karo Parisyan and Manny Gamburyan To Fight At UFC 87

Cousins Karo Parisyan and Manny Gamburyan have confirmed that they will return to the octagon on the same card - UFC 87: Seek And Destroy.

"I will be fighting August 9 in Minnesota," Parisyan told 15rounds. "There are a couple of names being thrown around, but there’s no opponent yet."

Parisyan dropped his last fight against Thiago Alves in what many, including Parisyan himself, felt was a controversial referee stoppage at UFN 13 in Denver, Co.

Parisyan's cousin Manny Gamburyan had no such trouble in his fight against Jeff Cox. Gamburyan quickly caught Cox in a guillotine choke, submitting him in under two minutes of the first round. Gamburyan can now look forward to a TUF 5 reunion with Rob Emerson.

“I am back in the Octagon in August against Rob Emerson,” said Gamburyan.
