Varner suffers broken foot and hand during split decision victory over Cerrone

Sunday’s WEC 38 event proved to be a rough one for WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner.

The 24-year old Arizona native was declared the split decision winner during his WEC lightweight title defense against Donald Cerrone after becoming the recipitant of an illegal blow. As a result of the infraction, the fight was stopped with three and a half minutes remaining since Varner could not continue. The referee then referred to the scorecards with two of the three judges ruling in Varner’s favor.

In addition to the controversial end, a source close to the fighter that was speaking on the condition of anonymity revealed that Varner sustained both a broken foot and a broken hand during the course of the bout. While there was some concern regarding the condition of his eye, the source expressed that the injury was not believed to be serious. However, in light of suffering multiple fractures, Varner could be sidelined for several months.

It’s believed that once Varner heals, his first fight back could be a rematch against Cerrone.

“As soon as I get cleared by the athletic commission we can do this again real soon,” Varner said during a post-fight interview.

The grazing knee to this eye was his way out IMHO. I'm not sure if anyone caught it, but when Cerrone walked up to Varner, Varner said, "I'm sorry I can't see" or something like that, and Cerrone said, "I couldnt' see for the last two round" Although Cerrone would never say it publicly he is pissed and thinks Varner punked out of the rest of that fight. Again, this is just speculation on my part, but I feel as though it is a pretty warranted speculation.

For the Rematch: Cerrone works on defending GnP and the Takedown and Varner will no longer be the champ.

Don't get me wrong, I like Varner, but I feel as though he used that as a way out....

If he really couldn't see then why were they - cornermen and Varner so concerned about getting him dressed up (sunglasses, hat, sweatshirt) after the fight instead of getting immediate medical attention?

Exactly! If your vision is F'ed you don't put on Shades to make thing look darker..you just don't. The more i think about this the more it gets on my nerves...

thats too bad if he was really taking the easy way out, people do stupid things when faced with a loss especially if their title is on the line, but i'm glad there's going to be a rematch

I have to agree with the medical shit........if he couldn't see than why play dress up?

Thats what i'm talkin about! I love that question and aggressive interviewing, but i'm sure we all know what he is going to say. I would like to really get Cerrone's honest reaction and thoughts about the "Injury"

Rewatch it NWO and listen to what Cerrone said to Varner about not being able to see and bring that up too...see what Varner thought when Cerrone said that.
