Bellator Fighting Championships recently began a push into women’s mixed martial arts announcing the signing of Megumi Fuji and Rosi Sexton, widely regarded as two of the top female fighters in the world.

Late last week, Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney talked with a little bit more detail regarding the promotion’s plans for an eight-woman tournament.

“The goal and the entire idea was to put together a tournament with the greatest female fighters in the world: Megumi Fuji, Rosi Sexton we’ve announced; Jessica Penne, Lisa Ward, as well.”

Those four fighters alone combine for a record of 48-6.

Fuji is widely regarded as the top female fighter in the world with her 19-0 record. Sexton is 10-1, with her only loss being at the hands of Gina Carano. Pene is 7-0, but hasn’t faced quite the roster of opponents Fuji and Sexton have. Ward is 12-5 and has a loss to Fuji, which she would surely like to avenge.

“The idea is eight women who are the best of the best and the woman who comes out of it is the best all around woman in the world,” commented Rebney.

The women’s tournament will be contested at 115 pounds and be part of Bellator’s Season 3, which begins in August.
