COD 4 "Prestige Mode"

What is the point of prestige mode in Call of duty 4?? I ranked up past level 55 and chose to enter "prestige mode", Only to have my rank reset and loose all my challenges I had completed. Now i have to unlock my weopons again plus complete all those friggin challenges.... Has anyone else entered this Mode? Im not sure what the point of it is?
