Halo: Reach Multiplayer Beta Coming In Spring 2010

Part of Halo: Reach's opening cinematic premiered at the Spike Video Game Awards last night. On the heels of the premiere, Microsoft sent out a press release that confirms a few details about the game.

According to the press release, the game's multiplayer beta will begin in Spring 2010. Those of you who purchased Halo 3: ODST will get exclusive access to this beta. Wonder if we'll see a spike in ODST's sales once the beta is imminent?

The release also mentions that Reach hits stores on Fall 2010. That shouldn't surprise you, considering we haven't heard all that much about it yet. Plus, it's Halo and a franchise that big begs for a holiday launch.

Bungie: "Halo: Reach for Us is Not Halo 4"

Halo: Reach, Bungie's upcoming new entry in the mega franchise, doesn't have the number 4 in its title for a reason: Canon-wise, they don't officially consider it the fourth entry of the Master Chief's saga.

"It's not a continuation of the Master Chief story, nor is it the start of a new trilogy. For us, it's a completely standalone game," said executive producer Joseph Tung to Edge Magazine (via Eurogamer).

Creative director Marcus Lehto explained further: "We desired to make a standalone title, something that is the culmination of a decade of our efforts building Halo titles." So while it may not technically be the "real" new entry in the Halo series, it appears that doesn't mean it'll be another more expansion-style offering like Halo 3: ODST, as Bungie says they're pushing the Xbox 360 harder than ever with Reach.

"We are definitely bending the Xbox as far as it'll bend," said campaign lead Chris Opdahl. That includes rebuilding the Elites from "the skeleton up," as well as having characters interact without helmets more often, allowing Bungie to use motion-capture acting for the first time in the series. And of course, there was the usual mysterious tease to keep fans hooked: "Without giving anything away, there's certainly some cool stuff we're doing in Reach that will encourage people to replay the campaign. There are going to be some big surprises in the campaign," Tung said.

Could Bungie be taking a page from the BioWare playbook and building branching campaign paths? Hopefully we'll find out more soon, although the big Halo: Reach reveal may not come until E3 takes place in June.

Halo: Reach beta begins May 3

Although Microsoft's X10 event is only half over, Xbox Live director of programming Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb has fired off the event's biggest news in one fell swoop. First and foremost, the Xbox 360's public face announced that the Halo: Reach beta will begin on May 3. The multiplayer beta can be accessed only via the Halo 3: ODST disc, much like the Halo 3 beta was opened up only to Crackdown players in 2007. Halo: Reach itself is not due out until the fall.

Suit up, Spartans! The Halo: Reach beta is less than three months away.

First announced at the 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo, Halo: Reach will depict some of the same events that took place in the novel Halo: The Fall of Reach by Eric Nylund. The book portrays both the siege of the titular fortress planet by the Covenant and the origins of the Spartan program, which developed dozens of supersoldiers like Halo series hero Master Chief. It will follow a squad of six Master Chief-like Spartan soldiers as they try to protect Reach's human inhabitants from the Covenant's relentless onslaught. A source who has seen Halo: Reach firsthand described it to GameSpot as "Gears of War with Spartans" and "very bleak and violent."
