10 Questions With Steve Steinbeiss (by Darrick Patrick)

Steve "The Hooligan" Steinbeiss is a professional mixed martial artist who has appeared in organizations such as World Extreme Cagefighting, Bodog Fight, Rock & Sock Promotions, and MTX Audio. At the time of this interview, his next scheduled match is against Ryan Jensen in the Ultimate Fighting Championship at UFC Fight Night 18: Condit vs. Kampmann on April 1st, 2009.

Darrick: How did you end up competing in professional mixed martial arts?

Steve: I was kickboxing professionally for a few years and then was offered good money to fight in Bodog against Jeff Ford, who was another kickboxer. I orginally crossed over for the pay raise and just started to like MMA more since kickboxing in the United States is dying.

Darrick: Who is someone that greatly influenced you while growing up?

Steve: My brother Ray has always been a major influence. He is my big brother and we started messing around together with fighting before either one of us decided to join a gym.

Darrick: Your next scheduled fight is against Ryan Jensen on April 1st. What are your thoughts about this upcoming match?

Steve: Ryan Jensen is a great fighter and a very solid opponent. He and I have really similar styles, so I think the fight will be quite entertaining. He keeps a fast pace and is very well-rounded.

Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect?

Steve: Obviously, I enjoy watching the strikers the most, but I respect most of the fighters out there. Fedor Emelianenko is still the best in the world in my opinion.

Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?

Steve: I just enjoy competing. There is also something about a hard day of sparring and driving home with bruises everywhere, but with a smile on your face.

Darrick: Do you have any words of advice for other individuals looking to compete in MMA?

Steve: Put your work in. I am a strong believer in the idea that how you do in a fight is based on what you do in training. Some guys don't train that hard, get lucky a couple of times, and then become lazy fighters.

Darrick: Outside of mixed martial arts, what are your other interests?

Steve: I watch a lot of movies and television with my wife. We are stuck on Entourage, Dexter, It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, and The Office.

Darrick: If you had a working time machine, what are some of the points in history that you would visit?

Steve: I would like to have been ringside for the K-1 Grand Prix tournaments during the Hoost and Aerts days. Those old K-1 events were so good.

Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.

Steve: I am a huge Howard Stern fan.

Darrick: What is your oldest memory?

Steve: Two days ago, I had a chicken sandwich for lunch. My memory sucks!
