10 Questions With Chad George (by Darrick Patrick)

Chad "Savage" George is a professional mixed martial artist who has appeared in organizations such as World Extreme Cagefighting, Bodog Fight, Total Combat, Call To Arms, Fist Series, Freestyle Cage Fighting, Valor Fighting, Tuff-N-Uff, HOOKnSHOOT, Battle In The Ballroom, and Total Fighting Alliance. At the time of this interview, his next scheduled match is against Scott Jorgensen in World Extreme Cagefighting at WEC 47: Bowles vs. Cruz on March 6th, 2010.

Darrick: What was the journey that led you to professional mixed martial arts competition?

Chad: I've wrestled most of my life. It began in junior high, then into high school, and finally to junior college wrestling. After JC, I really had no outlet for wrestling so I moved to L.A. from Sacramento to pursue art school (another passion that I had growing up). I worked in the art industry for a few years and found that I eventually wanted to start wrestling again.

Then about five years ago, a friend of mine introduced me to a Jiu-Jitsu school. And that was it. I was hooked. I fell instantly in love with the sport. More or less because it was a lot like wrestling. I had zero interest in fighting but the more and more I trained, the deeper into the rabbit hole I fell. After about two years of training half of the time while still doing full-time studio work, I decided to say it's time to follow my heart. I gave up the art game and now here I am.

Darrick: Where could you possibly see the future of the sport ten years from now?

Chad: The sport is going to be scary in ten years. Right now guys are monsters by growing up on one or two aspects of the game. Kids today are growing up on the entire sport of mixed martial arts. The talent is going to be insane.

Darrick: Do you have any words of advice for other individuals looking to compete in MMA?

Chad: I guess the best thing I could say is to train hard. Also, if this is really what you want to do - believe in it. No shortcuts. You are the only person in your own path that can add or remove road blocks. Take advantage of having a dream.

Darrick: Your next scheduled fight is against Scott Jorgensen on March 6th. What are your thoughts about this upcoming match?

Chad: I'm excited. This is a great fight for me. I get to show the world my skills against one of the top guys in the division. It should be a war to remember.

Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect?

Chad: Man, there's so many. Honestly though, I would have to go with two of my training partners, Mac Danzig and Dan Hardy. Both are extremely humble guys with inspiring work ethics. They are both workhorses with unbreakable will. Watching them train and training with them really gives me a lot of confidence in where I stand and what I can do.

Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?

Chad: I love the art of the sport. It's not about the anger or the violence, but the art the goes behind it.

Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests?

Chad: I like to draw. I used to be really big into graffiti when I was younger, but now I really enjoy just putting a pen to a pad and letting my mind wander. I may actually do my first art show this year.

Darrick: What is your oldest memory?

Chad: That's a hard question, I really have the worst memory. I guess I would have to say it was in kindergarten. My "now" best friend Levi punched me and stole my toy I was playing with because I wouldn't let him play with it. I think that's how it went. He's always reminding me of it. Funny now, we have been amazing friends ever since.

Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.

Chad: Ah, I'm a softy. (Laughs) Ask my girlfriend. She swears that if the guys at the gym saw me the way that I am at home, I would loose major points - but, shhh...keep that between us.

Darrick: What comic book character do you relate to most?

Chad: I'd have to say Homer Simpson. I know he's not exactly a comic book character but c'mon, I think he counts. Homer is my mirror image. He is horrible at most things in life but somehow always manages to end up on top. We both can agree on many topics of the world. He's very true on what he stands for, even if it makes absolutely no sense. If I say a word that's not a real word, I'm pretty sure he would understand it. I mean if I said it, then it must be a word, right?
