10 Questions With Joe Doherty (by Darrick Patrick)

Joe Doherty is a professional mixed martial artist who has appeared in organizations such as Victory Fighting Championship, Midwest Championship Fighting, SportFight, and Ring Of Fire events Full Blast, River Valley Rumble, Overdrive, and No Mercy. At the time of this very short interview, his next scheduled match is against Jeff Curran in Bellator Fighting Championships at BFC 14 on April 15th, 2010.

Darrick: What was the journey that led you to professional mixed martial arts competition?

Joe: I was a huge fight fan and then a huge UFC fan from the get-go. My friends and I ordered the first Ultimate Fighting Championship pay-per-view and I was hooked. Then I met a guy at a party with a Jiu-Jitsu shirt on and talked to him. I started doing Jiu-Jitsu shortly afterwards and have just kept on going.

Darrick: Who is someone that greatly influenced you while growing up?

Joe: Mainly my dad - he raised my brother and I by himself.

Darrick: Any words of advice for other individuals looking to train in MMA?

Joe: Make sure that you train for awhile before you actually get into the cage and fight. Also, don't be a thug.

Darrick: Your next scheduled fight is against Jeff Curran on April 15th. What are your thoughts about this upcoming match?

Joe: Pretty simple going into this one - it's a tough fight versus a tough guy.

Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect?

Joe: Mainly guys in my camp such as my coaches, Aaron and Anthony. My teammates Drew, Mirsad, Joel, Levi, Marcos, and the guys that helped me get started.

Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?

Joe: I have met some really good people through fighting. I'd say that's the most fulfilling part for me, just the people I've met.

Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests?

Joe: Music, movies, nutrition, tattoos, and my daughter.

Darrick: What is your oldest memory?

Joe: That's a tough one. Man, I don't know. Probably first grade math with flash cards.

Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.

Joe: I'm pretty boring. I don't drink much, don't play video games or watch TV, and I don't hunt or fish. I just work a full-time job building trains and live a fairly uneventful life for the most part, but maybe most people already knew that about me.

Darrick: If you were stuck in a bomb shelter for the rest of your life, what three items would you take in with you besides food and water?

Joe: My guitar, a photograph of my family, and an iPod.
