10 Questions With Evan Dunham (by Darrick Patrick)

Evan Dunham is a professional mixed martial artist who has appeared in organizations such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Gladiator Challenge, Palace Fighting Championship, Desert Brawl, Elite Warriors Championship, Platinum Fighting Productions, and Rise Fighting Championships. At the time of this short interview, his next scheduled match is against Kenny Florian in the main event of the Ultimate Fighting Championship at UFC: Fight For The Troops 2 on January 22nd, 2011.

Darrick: How did you end up competing professionally in mixed martial arts?

Evan: I began with wrestling in middle school and stayed with it into high school. Then, I took up Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2000 and decided to fight several years later to see if BJJ worked. After my first fight I had my answer and a new sport that I have grown to love.

Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect?

Evan: I respect many fighters but a few in particular are Randy Couture, Chris Leben, Georges St-Pierre (GSP), BJ Penn, Grey Maynard, and Martin Kampmann. Mainly due to the fact that they either show lots of heart or because they are so good at making people fight their fight.

Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?

Evan: The sense of self-accomplishment which comes from hard work and achieving personal goals.

Darrick: Your next scheduled match is against Kenny Florian on January 22nd. What are your thoughts about this upcoming fight?

Evan: I am very excited about this fight. Kenny is one of those fighters that I like a lot because of the way he fights and I am a fan of his. So it will mean a lot to me when I go in there and beat him.

Darrick: Any words of advice for other individuals looking to compete in MMA?

Evan: Work your ass off! Also, believe in yourself. If you don't, nobody else will.

Darrick: Who is someone that greatly influenced you while growing up?

Evan: My dad was mainly the best influence in my life. He taught me many things, such as the value of hard work and to never give in.

Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests?

Evan: Hanging out with my fiancée and dog. I also enjoy working around the house and Oregon Ducks football.

Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.

Evan: I like scary movies and Halloween.

Darrick: What is your oldest memory?

Evan: Playing on the jungle gym during preschool, but just clips of it.

Darrick: If you were stuck in a bomb shelter for the rest of your life, what three items would you take in with you besides food and water?

Evan: I'd take in a heavy bag and a deck of cards. I'm not quite sure at the moment what the other thing would be. I'd need a lot of time to think about that.
