10 Questions With Rick Hawn (by Darrick Patrick)

Rick Hawn is a professional mixed martial artist who has competed in organizations such as Bellator Fighting Championships, Triumph Promotions, World Championship Fighting, and Cage Fighting Xtreme. He was also a member of the 2004 U.S. Olympic Judo Team. In his most recent MMA bout, he was victorious over Jim Wallhead in the first round of the season four Bellator welterweight tournament. At the time of this interview, his next scheduled match is against Lyman Good in the semifinals of the fourth season welterweight tournament of Bellator Fighting Championships at BFC 39 on April 2nd, 2011.

Darrick: What was the journey that led you to professional mixed martial arts competition?

Rick: I have always wanted to fight in MMA since I was younger. My main focus though was making the Olympic team first.

Darrick: Do you have any words of advice for other individuals looking to compete in MMA?

Rick: The advice that I can give would be to train hard at whatever art you're training in. No matter how tough it is, stay focused on your long-term goals.

Darrick: Who is someone in the sport that you highly respect?

Rick: I have always respected guys like Randy Couture. He started mixed martial arts late in life like myself. He is a very smart and respectful fighter. He always has a great game plan for whoever he's fighting.

Darrick: Your most recent match was a victory over Jim Wallhead on March 5th in the opening round of the Bellator season four welterweight tournment and your next scheduled bout is now against Lyman Good on April 2nd. What are your thoughts about your latest match and your upcoming fight?

Rick: Jim Wallhead is a very tough and experienced fighter. Having fought him last week, I can still say that. It was a great win for me and I'm looking forward to my next fight against Lyman Good. Lyman is a very strong guy and has the experience of winning this tournament a couple years ago. It's going to be a tough fight but I'm ready for the challenge.

Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?

Rick: I get the most fulfillment from martial arts from putting in all the hard work and seeing the results, sometimes months down the road. It's a great feeling for me to see constant improvement at my new sport.

Darrick: Who are some of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up?

Rick: The main people that have influenced me were my coaches growing up. Jimmy Pedro Jr. and Sr. were the biggest influences. They have made me what I am today when it comes to training and preparation.

Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests?

Rick: My other interests are anything that has to do with the outdoors. Biking, hiking, and BBQing are the main ones.

Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.

Rick: I enjoy relaxing on the couch and watching movies in my seldom free time.

Darrick: What is your oldest memory?

Rick: My oldest memories are of playing as a little kid and how long the days seemed to be at that time.

Darrick: If you were the last person alive on Earth, what do you think you'd do to entertain yourself?

Rick: I would read a lot and look for fun things to entertain myself with.
