10 Questions With Phillip Wyman (by Darrick Patrick)
Phillip "The Wicked" Wyman is a professional mixed martial artist who has appeared in organizations such as World Extreme Cagefighting, Smash MMA, Combat Sport Challenge, and Valor Fighting.
Darrick: What was the path that led you to competing in professional mixed martial arts?
Phillip: In 2001, The Marine Corps developed a combative martial art. I was thrust into the ring to "try out" techniques that worked in a combat situation.
Darrick: In your experience so far, what brings you the most fulfillment out of MMA?
Phillip: Personal pride and the security that I can handle myself in any arena.
Darrick: Who is someone in the sport that you highly respect?
Phillip: Definitely Ken Shamrock - he paved the way for thousands to follow and he gave me a shot at being a Lion's Den fighter. He is a professional in and out of the ring.
Darrick: What does a typical training session for you consist of?
Phillip: One and a half hours of cardio and abs in the morning - then three and a half hours of kickboxing, grappling, and MMA in the evening. I train five to six days a week.
Darrick: Do you have any words of advice for other individuals looking to train in martial arts?
Phillip: Look for a complete system, one that goes from standing to ground and then back again. One school may not always be enough - shop around.
Darrick: Who are some of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up?
Phillip: James Prouty, my first Sensei in Karate, and Jesus.
Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests?
Phillip: I am a new daddy and that consumes most of my off time. I also like to watch movies on the big screen!
Darrick: If you were falling from an airplane with no parachute, what thoughts do you believe would be going through your head?
Phillip: How do I survive this? Remember your Marine Corps training! Think, Jarhead, think!
Darrick: What is your oldest memory?
Phillip: Boxing with my dad in the house. My mom used to work second and third shift, so he would stay with us after twelve-hour days and teach me what I needed to know to be a boy. He taught me to fear no man and love my mom.
Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.
Phillip: I love the Lord with all of my heart. I used to be a pretty bad sinner, now I trust in Him in all that I do. I am really trying to change my life around. Through Him anything and everything is possible.
