10 Questions With Bryan Humes (by Darrick Patrick)
Bryan "Alley Cat" Humes is a professional mixed martial artist who has competed in organizations such as Bodog Fight and Ultimate Combat Experience. At the time of this interview, his next scheduled match is against Joel Traves at Shark Fights 1 on October 24th, 2008.
Darrick: What was the road that led you to competing professionally in mixed martial arts?
Bryan: I was watching The Ultimate Fighter marathon of season one - I thought this is cool and as I watched episode after episode, I became very interested. Then came the episode where Dana White was scolding everyone about all of the pussy fighters that were complaining and stuff. He then said something that lit that fire in me - "Do you want to be a fucking fighter?" Then Forrest and Stephan beat the crap out of each other. I was hooked and said to myself, "Yeah, I want to be a fighter."
So, that started my journey. At first, I was into it as a way to get myself back into shape. I was a two-letter athlete in school (football and wrestling) and over the years I had let myself go. I trained really hard and nine months later in September of 2006, I got my first ammy Muay Thai fight. I turned pro this year and I have had two professional MMA fights and one pro Muay Thai fight...3-0, baby.
Darrick: Who are some of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up?
Bryan: Well, I never had my father around as a child, so I turned to my uncle for guidance and direction. And then there was Hulk Hogan, of course. (Laughs)
Darrick: Your next scheduled fight is against Joel Traves on October 24th. What are your thoughts about this upcoming match?
Bryan: I think it's going to be a brutal fight with lots of action. I am the kind of fighter who likes to bang it out and from what I understand, he does as well. We are around the same size, build, and weight - so it's gonna' be interesting to say the least. I set a furious pace and cardio is the key to everything, so I hope he can keep up!
Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?
Bryan: Discipline and pride.
Darrick: Any words of advice for other individuals looking to train in MMA?
Bryan: Follow your heart, do what you believe in, and don't let anyone tell you that you can't do something.
Darrick: Where could you possibly see the future of the sport ten years from now?
Bryan: Not really sure about that, but hopefully it's gone mainstream and there are major fighting organizations other than just the UFC. It seems they have cornered the market and I don't believe that is good for the sport at all.
Darrick: Outside of competitive fighting, what are your other interests?
Bryan: Football, of course. I like spending time with my family, except for when I am getting ready for a fight - they drive me nuts. It's all good though 'cause there is nothing better than your kids making you smile when your down and out.
Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.
Bryan: I love the Discovery Channel and National Geographic. I am a nature freak, I think it calms my mind or something. I also like mustard on my pizza!
Darrick: If you were stuck in the middle of an ocean with only three items, what would they be?
Bryan: The Verizon network, so I could call for help! Also, fresh water while I was waiting for help and sunblock 'cause I burn like a newborn.
Darrick: What is your oldest memory?
Bryan: I don't relish too much on the past, as my childhood was "okay" to say the least. So, my oldest memory to date that I love to remember (besides the birth of my son) is probably when I married my wonderful wife. Love you, babe.
