10 Questions With Greg McIntyre (by Darrick Patrick)
Greg McIntyre is a professional mixed martial artist who has appeared in organizations such as World Extreme Cagefighting, King Of The Cage, PURECOMBAT, Gladiator Challenge, Total Combat, and Kage Kombat. He was also featured on an episode of the television show TapouT during the second season of the series.
Darrick: What led you to competing professionally in mixed martial arts?
Greg: I didn't discover fighting, fighting found Greg MAK! Like many, I was fascinated with MMA since the Royce days. I started wrestling in junior high and went from there - eventually taking on Jiu-Jitsu, boxing, and then Muay Thai. I was always a scrappy kid, so it made sense.
Darrick: Who are some of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up?
Greg: One of the people who influenced me the most was my father, who always liked to throw me into situations I didn't like or was not used to. Then, he'd walk away as if to say "deal with it" or "figure it out". He helped me prepare to become a man. The other was the opposite, a spiritual influence and guide. My mentor and pastor Mark Hoffman. I was an angry and emotional kid, without Mark I would've made many decisions differently growing up.
Darrick: What does a "normal" training session for you consist of?
Greg: Training when I'm in good health is two times a day. One session is standing, hitting pads, or sparring. Then a later one for grappling and MMA stuff, and we'll finish it off with a brutal conditioning session.
Darrick: In your experience so far, what brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?
Greg: Competing is fulfilling, but just rolling Jiu-Jitsu for fun is the best. I like to be creative and in Jiu-Jitsu you never stop learning.
Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect?
Greg: My instructor Dean Lister, he's a genius when it comes to Jiu-Jitsu. I've also always looked up to B.J. Penn, his style of fighting, and mental game. Hope to train with him someday.
Darrick: Any words of advice for other individuals looking to train in MMA?
Greg: Yes, do not jump in right away! It will be short lived. If you love it, start with Jiu-Jitsu for a few years. Get your purple belt at least, then begin to cross-train with boxing and MMA. You need a good base first. If you're smart, do it this way.
Darrick: Outside of mixed martial arts, what are your other interests?
Greg: I love my family and have close friends that are like brothers. I like to spend my time hanging out and joking around. Also, the beach!
Darrick: What is your oldest memory?
Greg: Probably getting beat up while very young by my older brother in fights that I always started. At least that's what my mom says.
Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.
Greg: I am also a X-ray tech at a trauma hospital...bills to pay.
Darrick: What moments in your life have you been proudest of so far?
Greg: Winning fights and tournaments. Anytime I think of how far I've come back since dealing with UC, an ileostomy bag, and the long and patient recovery that continues today.
