10 Questions With Zak Jensen (by Darrick Patrick)
Zak Jensen is a professional mixed martial artist who has appeared in organizations such as Extreme Challenge, Brutaal, EFX, Beatdown At 4 Bears, WFC, and KO Productions. At the time of this interview, his next scheduled match is against Jesse Wallace at Beatdown At 4 Bears: Hinkle vs. Tuchscherer on March 21st, 2009.
Darrick: What was the road that led you to professional mixed martial arts competition?
Zak: I wrestled in college and when I was done I was looking for a way to stay involved in sports. I had fought in a few tough guy boxing tournaments while I was in college and went to the boxing gym whenever I could, so after my eligibility was out I started Golden Gloves. I was watching the Upper Midwest Golden Gloves Championships and I started talking to my boxing coach's friend who was a MMA promoter. He asked if I would ever be interested in doing mixed martial arts and I said yes. A few months later I had a fight, won in the first round, and after that I started to focus on MMA. That was in May of 2007.
Darrick: Who is someone in the sport that you highly respect?
Zak: I respect Frank Mir because he has overcome a lot on his road back to the top.
Darrick: Your next scheduled fight is against Jesse Wallace on March 21st. What are your thoughts about this upcoming match?
Zak: Jesse is a very strong fighter - he has trained with Brock Lesnar and has been coached by Greg Nelson. I know he will be ready for the fight. I have been training very hard and recently just moved to a new camp in Gorilla Combat. I am looking forward to the fight and I know it will be a good one for the fans to watch.
Darrick: Who are a few of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up?
Zak: My father, my grandfather, and my high school wrestling coach Al Price.
Darrick: Any words of advice for other individuals looking to compete in MMA?
Zak: Never let anyone tell you that you can't achieve your goals and always work hard.
Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?
Zak: I like the competitiveness and also the respect everybody has for everyone else. As soon as the fight is over, we shake hands and are friendly.
Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests?
Zak: I enjoy watching football and hockey - I also like fishing and the outdoors.
Darrick: What is your oldest memory?
Zak: Crashing my Big Wheel into a parked car when I was around three years old.
Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.
Zak: I like cooking and watching the Food Network.
Darrick: If you had superpowers, what would they be?
Zak: I would like to be a human lie detector. In this day and age, it would be helpful to know who is telling the truth and who you can truly trust.
