10 Questions With Kyle Pimentel (by Darrick Patrick)
Kyle Pimentel is a professional mixed martial artist who has appeared in Gladiator Challenge and various Cage Combat Fighting Championships events such as Rumble in the Park II, Meltdown, Total Elimination, and Throwdown at the Pavilion. At the time of this interview, his next scheduled match is against Olaf Alfonso in the Palace Fighting Championship organization at PFC 13: Validation on May 8th, 2009.
Darrick: How did you end up competing in professional mixed martial arts?
Kyle: It was a slow journey at first. I started training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in my hometown of Arcata, California and the first year I trained it was primarily self-defense stuff. After awhile, the top student there and I wanted to get into more sport Jiu-Jitsu techniques. Long story short, we ended up leaving where we were at, began garage training, and also training wherever we could until my friend opened up his own school. I trained there with some other people who were fighting and I never thought that I would end up fighting in the cage - I thought those guys were nuts. I finally convinced myself to do an amateur match up in Oregon, won the fight, and was immediately hooked. I moved to Santa Rosa to train full-time with a more "hardcore" team of fighters and I've been here ever since.
Darrick: In your experience so far, what brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?
Kyle: Just that I have fun doing it. You should only do things in life that make you happy.
Darrick: Your next scheduled match is against Olaf Alfonso on May 8th. What are your thoughts about this upcoming match?
Kyle: I'm very excited to be fighting Olaf for the Palace Fighting 170 title. He is a very tough, seasoned fighter. He has fought against many great fighters including Mach Sakurai, Gilbert Melendez, and Razor Rob - just to name a few.
Darrick: Do you have any words of advice for other individuals looking to train in MMA?
Kyle: Don't train because it's cool, train because you love doing it. If you aren't having fun, it's not for you.
Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect?
Kyle: There are many that I respect, but overall I really respect the guys just beginning to get into the sport because it takes a lot in a person to get little or no pay and take the beatings that we do. I respect the guys and girls who are respectful themselves. I also really respect the fans that don't boo at us!
Darrick: Where could you possibly see the future of mixed martial arts ten years from now?
Kyle: I think it will become the biggest sporting event in the United States. People are really beginning to love MMA fights.
Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests?
Kyle: I love riding motorcycles, playing video games, and spending time with my family and friends the most. I like traveling and seeing other cultures as well. So far, I have only been to Mexico and China. I want to eventually visit many countries and just experience life. I also love my girlfriend very much.
Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.
Kyle: My last name is spelled Pimentel, not Pimental. (Laughs) Also, I love my family more than anything and I will do anything for them.
Darrick: What is your oldest memory?
Kyle: Probably riding with my dad on his motorcycle. He doesn't have it anymore, but when he did he would sit me on the gas tank and we would go for rides. That was some of the most fun that I've ever had in my entire life.
Darrick: If you were stuck in the middle of an ocean with only three items, what would they be?
Kyle: Hopefully, I'd wash up and get stranded on an island because I'm terrified of sharks. They are plotting against me, I know it! I would want to have a trained monkey bartender, a lot of Sailor Jerry Rum and Coke, and last but not least, a surfboard.
