10 Questions With Isaque Martinez (by Darrick Patrick)
Isaque Martinez is a professional mixed martial artist who has appeared in the Gladiator Challenge organization and King Of The Cage events such as Rapture, Smashing Machine, and Civil War. At the time of this interview, his next scheduled match is against Andre Black tonight at King Of The Cage: El Lobo on May 23rd, 2009.
Darrick: What was the journey that led you to professional mixed martial arts competition?
Isaque: It all started when my dad got me into wrestling when I was five years old. I was never much for street fighting, but loved the competition aspect of MMA.
Darrick: Who are some of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up?
Isaque: My stepdad, Greg, who never treated me as anything less than his son. My mom has also shown nothing but love and support for me. All of my wrestling coaches were a huge influence too as they taught me the basics of what I know today.
Darrick: Any words of advice for other individuals looking to train in MMA?
Isaque: Set your goals high. That way when you accomplish them you can feel that much more victorious.
Darrick: Your next scheduled fight is against Andre Black this evening on May 23rd. What are your thoughts about this upcoming match?
Isaque: It's going to be a battle, but that's what I train for. If it was easy, then everyone would be doing it. I'm really looking to make a statement with this fight.
Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect?
Isaque: Fedor Emelianenko comes to mind, for sure. He's the man to beat and seems to be unbeatable. Really though, anybody willing to step into the cage deserves respect. This is a gentleman's sport.
Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?
Isaque: Jumping up on the cage to celebrate a victory and also the self-discipline that is involved with it all.
Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests?
Isaque: Spending time with my family and taking pride in everything that I do.
Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.
Isaque: I hate confrontation.
Darrick: What is your oldest memory?
Isaque: Being held down by my cousins while my mom put eye drops in my eyes. I wasn't much of a wrestler then. (Laughs)
Darrick: If you were stuck in a bomb shelter for the rest of your life, what three items would you take in with you besides food and water?
Isaque: A Bible, a MMA magazine, and tissue paper.
