10 Questions With Ricardo Lamas (by Darrick Patrick)
Ricardo "The Bully" Lamas is a professional mixed martial artist who has competed in organizations such as World Extreme Cagefighting, Ironheart Crown, Warriors Collide, International Sport Combat Federation, and Fight Card Entertainment. At the time of this interview, his next scheduled match is against Danny Castillo in World Extreme Cagefighting at WEC 42: Torres vs. Bowles on August 9th, 2009.
Darrick: How did you end up competing professionally in mixed martial arts?
Ricardo: I wrestled in high school and college, and when I started my coaching career I still had a strong desire to compete. I have always been a fan of mixed martial arts ever since I first saw it when I was twelve. It was something I wanted to try doing and eventually I did.
Darrick: Your next scheduled match is against Danny Castillo on August 9th. What are your thoughts about this upcoming fight?
Ricardo: I think it is going to be an exciting fight. We both have a strong wrestling background and when you put two wrestlers in a cage against each other there is sure to be non-stop action.
Darrick: Who are some of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up?
Ricardo: My parents shaped me into the man that I am today. My father is fearless and has a very big heart, which I think he passed down to me. My mother and father both taught me to always stick up for myself. I'm the youngest of six boys, so getting beaten on daily helped to toughen me up.
Darrick: Do you have any words of advice for other individuals looking to train in MMA?
Ricardo: Try out different gyms and see which one suits you the best. Train hard and believe in yourself.
Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect?
Ricardo: I obviously hold a lot of respect for the fighters that started this sport such as Royce Gracie, Ken Shamrock, Dan Severn, Vitor Belfort, and Tito Ortiz. Randy Couture is always an inspiration to watch, Anderson Silva is amazing, and even though I'm fighting one of his guys in August, I'm a big fan of Urijah Faber.
Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?
Ricardo: The looks on the faces of my family and friends after I get done fighting in the cage.
Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests?
Ricardo: I'm really into health and fitness. I'm a personal trainer on the side and I still help out with my old college team as an assistant coach for the wrestling team. Other than that, I like to hang out with my family, friends, and my English Bull Terrier named Chico.
Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.
Ricardo: I spend every Sunday with my niece and nephew.
Darrick: What is your oldest memory?
Ricardo: Being in kindergarten crying because I wanted to go home.
Darrick: If you had a working time machine, what are some of the points in history that you would visit?
Ricardo: The birth of Jesus, the signing of the Declaration of Independence, I would visit my parents as children, the prehistoric era, and the very first fist fight.
