10 Questions With Zack Micklewright (by Darrick Patrick)

Zack "Maverick" Micklewright is a professional mixed martial artist who has appeared in organizations such as Glory Fighting Championships, Midwest King Of The Ring, and Extreme Challenge. At the time of this interview, his next scheduled match is against Muhsin Corbbrey in World Extreme Cagefighting at WEC 45: Cerrone vs. Ratcliff on December 19th, 2009.

Darrick: [I]What was the road that led you to professional mixed martial arts competition?[/I]

Zack: I always watched the old UFC events when I was a kid. I was a big Shamrock fan, so I made sure to rent the UFC shows where he fought Dan Severn. My journey really began though when I went to a club in Davenport, Iowa that has a weekly fight show. The first time I had ever gone there, my friends convinced me to fight. I did and lost a decision, but after that I was addicted! So, I started training a little bit here and there, then started doing it full-time and now here I am.

Darrick: In your experience so far, what brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?

Zack: First off, I would say the competition. There is also so much to learn in MMA that it's ridiculous. And there's no better sport than having two animals locked in a cage ready to do battle.

Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect?

Zack: Pat Miletich is my coach, and he's such a legend and an icon in the sport. Josh Neer and Spencer Fisher are friends of mine and they love to throw down and fight no matter who the opponent is. Also, all of my training partners because without them I wouldn't be where I'm at.

Darrick: Your next scheduled match is against Muhsin Corbbrey on December 19th. What are your thoughts about this upcoming fight?

Zack: I think this is a great match-up for me. I believe he likes to keep the fight standing and so do I. I think I can bring him trouble with my aggressiveness and my power. This match definitely has the potential to be fight of the night, but I'm pushing for my knockout bonus.

Darrick: Do you have any words of advice for other individuals looking to compete in MMA?

Zack: This sport is so mainstream now, there's competition everywhere. So I would just say - good luck!

Darrick: Who are some of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up?

Zack: My parents for sure. They taught me that I need to work for everything I get, and they never spoonfed me or spoiled me. I think that is really what made me so strong today.

Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests?

Zack: Fishing, fishing, and fishing. All day long during the summer! (Laughs) I also like golfing, even though I'm terrible at it.

Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.

Zack: I have two birds that have sex just about every day. It's very disturbing...yuck.

Darrick: What is your oldest memory?

Zack: I remember opening presents on my second birthday. I got a cowboy hat and one of those spring horses and I named him Trigger. (Laughs)

Darrick: If you had superpowers, what would they be?

Zack: I wish that I could teleport to anywhere in the world in a split second. I'd also like to have x-ray/penetrating vision, and I think any guy would know the reason for this.
