10 Questions With Miesha Tate (by Darrick Patrick)
Miesha "Takedown" Tate is a professional mixed martial artist who has competed in organizations such as Strikeforce, Freestyle Cage Fighting, HOOKnSHOOT, CageSport, and Atlas Fights. At the time of this interview, her next scheduled match is against Zoila Frausto in Strikeforce at ShoMMA 7: Johnson vs. Mahe on March 26th, 2010.
Darrick: What was the path that led you to competing professionally in mixed martial arts?
Miesha: I wrestled in high school on the guy's team and I found MMA through a club sport at Central Washington University which I never would have tried if it hadn't been for my wrestling background. Then it was just a snowball effect, I was fighting in no time.
Darrick: Who are some of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up?
Miesha: My parents and my grandma. We have a lot of strong women in our family that are good role models and people I have always looked up to as well.
Darrick: Any words of advice for other individuals looking to train in MMA?
Miesha: Make sure you're ready and have people backing you that you can trust. Also, don't be too hasty.
Darrick: Your next scheduled match is against Zoila Frausto on March 26th. What are your thoughts about this upcoming fight?
Miesha: I'm very excited for this fight! I think Zoila is a strong fighter and she's got good kickboxing, but I think I have better skills than her overall and that's going to show when we fight. She doesn't have enough time to train to be ready for me.
Darrick: Are there any extra struggles being a female in mixed martial arts or do you believe it to be basically the same difficulty for both genders?
Miesha: The only extra struggles being a female within MMA is being accepted. It's a longer hill to climb as a female in the sport but there are plenty of people backing us, so we just have to stick together and focus on the positive.
Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?
Miesha: The competition, I love competing against other top females. It's very exhilarating and I always feel like I learn something which in turn makes me a stronger, better person in the end.
Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests?
Miesha: I like cooking and love baking! I enjoy watching movies too and I love camping.
Darrick: What is your oldest memory?
Miesha: I remember my first cat, Cotton. I picked her out when I was two years old. I was so mean to that poor cat, but not on purpose though. She was my best friend and I'd carry her around by her head! She loved me though. (Laughs)
Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.
Miesha: I like to bake and decorate cakes. I actually sell them on the side.
Darrick: When you're no longer amongst the living, how would you most like to be remembered?
Miesha: I just want to be remembered as a good person who touched and inspired a lot of lives.
