10 Questions With Yancy Medeiros (by Darrick Patrick)

Yancy "Frisson" Medeiros is a professional mixed martial artist who has competed in organizations such as Strikeforce, Hawaii Fight League, Up N Up, and at Destiny MMA events Pier Fighter 1 and Maui No Ka'oi. At the time of this interview, his most recent match was a victory over Raul Castillo last night in Strikeforce at ShoMMA 6: Kaufman vs. Hashi on February 26th, 2010.

Darrick: What was the path that led you to competing professionally in mixed martial arts?

Yancy: I was weighing in at around 245 pounds back in 2007 and I just started working out to get into shape. I just wanted to lose weight. I came to practice every day and my coaches saw my commitment. Eventually, they asked me if I wanted to start fighting.

Darrick: Who are some of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up?

Yancy: Besides my parents, my uncle Martin and aunty Sheila Buell influenced me very much in my life. Without my parents and them, I wouldn't be the man that I am today.

Darrick: Any words of advice for other individuals looking to compete in MMA?

Yancy: Don't be in a rush to get in the ring/cage. Train hard and put in a lot of commitment.

Darrick: Your most recent match was a decision victory last night against Raul Castillo. What were your thoughts going into this fight?

Yancy: I did a lot of research on Raul and he has some really impressive ground skills. My game plan was mainly to take that away from him and keep my fight standing.

Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?

Yancy: For me, it's training as hard as I can and giving everything that I have in the cage. Also, devoting your fight to a higher power/person gives you an unreal feeling and pushes you to give it your all.

Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect?

Yancy: I respect anyone who has the courage to go in the ring. It takes a lot, both mentally and physically. If I had to choose some people though, I would probably start out with B.J. Penn because of how well he represents Hawaii. Also, Anderson Silva due to the fact that he is just a real person. I really like the way they both carry themselves outside of the ring. They are role models to me.

Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests?

Yancy: Besides spending time with my daughter, there's not a whole lot else. I'm a real laid-back person. If I'm not training, I'm usually working. When I do have the time, I like chillin' with the boys and just kicking back. I'm down for whatever. (Laughs)

Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.

Yancy: I like watching the anime cartoon Bleach.

Darrick: What is your oldest memory?

Yancy: That's a pretty tough one. I think it would be me in preschool fighting with my classmates. Oh, and also peeing in the plants. (Laughs)

Darrick: If you had 24 hours left to live, how would you spend that time?

Yancy: The time would be spent with my daughter. She's number one in my life.
