10 Questions With Matt Delanoit (by Darrick Patrick)
Matt Delanoit is a professional mixed martial artist who has competed in organizations such as Midwest Cage Championship, Warriors 4 Warriors, Max Fights DM, Adrenaline MMA, TriState Cage Fights, Victory Fighting Championship, The Cage Inc., Gladiators Cage Fighting, EVO MMA, United Fight League, Extreme Challenge, and Titan Fighting Championships. At the time of this interview, his next scheduled match is against John Alessio in Ring Of Fire at ROF 37: Warlords on March 5th, 2010.
Darrick: How did you end up competing professionally in mixed martial arts?
Matt: I heard that there were places that you could get paid to fight, so I went to a few events to see what I might be getting into. It was clear to me that I was not ready yet. At that point, the only access I had to MMA was old UFC, PRIDE, and King of the Cage DVDs that I could get my hands on. I was fascinated with the sport and figured I should find a gym that could teach me more about it. A friend of mine ended up finding Elite Performance by accident and we both joined the next week. About four months later I had my first professional MMA fight.
Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect?
Matt: There are too many to name. Everyone has their own story and their own reason for fighting. If you look hard enough, you can find inspiration in everyone's story.
Darrick: Any words of advice for other individuals looking to compete in MMA?
Matt: Be open-minded, lose your ego, and believe in yourself. Also, be ready to put in your 10,000 hours if you want to be great.
Darrick: Your next scheduled match is against John Alessio on March 5th. What are your thoughts about this upcoming fight?
Matt: I'm pretty relaxed. I'm excited to fight a guy with that kind of resume. Being able to do it at home, here in Omaha - well, that just makes it that much better.
Darrick: Who are some of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up?
Matt: My older brothers, I always wanted to hang out with them. I was always trying to prove that I was big enough and tough enough to hang.
Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?
Matt: Winning. That's what we're here for. Having the hard work in the gym pay off by having my hand raised, that's what I'm after.
Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests?
Matt: I just like to hang with my friends, we can be doing anything. I just appreciate good company. I try to stay open-minded so I usually enjoy whatever we end up doing, or at least the experience.
Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.
Matt: I just started to read the book Ultramarathon Man, and I think I should plan to run one in my life. Not many people in existence have ran one hundred miles straight. I would like to.
Darrick: What is your oldest memory?
Matt: My oldest memory is snooping for Christmas presents. (Laughs)
Darrick: If you had a working time machine, what are some of the points in history that you would visit?
Matt: The '60s and the '70s. That would have been an exciting time. So much freedom of expression and creativity without all of the modern day distractions like the internet and cell phones. That would be pretty awesome.
