10 Questions With Karen Darabedyan (by Darrick Patrick)
Karen Darabedyan is a professional mixed martial artist who has appeared in organizations such as World Extreme Cagefighting, Shark Fights, Call To Arms, Gladiator Challenge, Total Fighting Alliance, Long Beach Fight Night, All Star Boxing, Platinum Fighting Productions, Extreme Fighters World Championships, and California Extreme Fighting. At the time of this very short interview, his next scheduled match is against Bart Palaszewski in World Extreme Cagefighting at WEC 47: Bowles vs. Cruz today on March 6th, 2010.
Darrick: What was the journey that led you to professional mixed martial arts competition?
Karen: I started training in martial arts when I was five years old. My dad got me into sports and I did just about every sport that was possible, so that pushed me athletically. As I grew, I slowly turned into the direction of mixed martial arts.
Darrick: Your next scheduled fight is against Bart Palaszewski this evening on March 6th. What are your thoughts about this upcoming match?
Karen: I think it is a really good match-up for both of us that the WEC has lined up. He is a very tough guy. I have been training really hard for this fight with Palaszewski, so I'm going into this fight very prepared.
Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect?
Karen: I really respect Georges St-Pierre and B.J. Penn. I have always looked up to them because they are just extremely good at what they do.
Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?
Karen: Just having the chance to do something that not everybody can do.
Darrick: Who is someone that greatly influenced you while growing up?
Karen: My dad played a huge role in my life as an athlete since he was the one that initially got me into sports. Really, he influenced me the most in life overall. He passed away about three years ago.
Darrick: Do you have any words of advice for other individuals looking to train in MMA?
Karen: If anybody out there is even thinking about training in mixed martial arts, I think they should for sure do it. It's the greatest sport in the world and also a great way to stay healthy.
Darrick: Outside of mixed martial arts, what are your other interests?
Karen: At this point in my life, MMA is my entire life. I eat it, drink it, and sleep it. It's a full-time job. I don't currently have the time to really get into anything else.
Darrick: What is your oldest memory?
Karen: When I first went to Karate back in Armenia is my oldest memory. I was only five years old.
Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.
Karen: I used to play the piano. Until now, not very many people knew about that.
Darrick: If you were the last person alive on Earth, what do you think you'd do to entertain yourself?
Karen: I would probably drive all of the exotic cars that I could find to keep myself busy.
