10 Questions With William Romero (by Darrick Patrick)
William "Leon" Romero is a professional mixed martial artist who has appeared in organizations such as Ringside MMA, Iroquois Mixed Martial Arts Championships, and Xtreme MMA. At the time of this interview, his next scheduled match is against Patricio Freire in the first round of the second season featherweight tournament of Bellator Fighting Championships at BFC 14 on April 15th, 2010.
Darrick: What was the road that led you to professional mixed martial arts competition?
William: Ever since I was a young kid, I was fascinated by martial arts. Especially with guys like Bruce Lee, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and recently Jet Li and Tony Jaa. It has always been a passion of mine since I can remember and I was consistently mimicking their styles when I was a boy.
Darrick: Your next scheduled fight is against Patricio Freire on April 15th. What are your thoughts about this upcoming match?
William: I'm very excited about my upcoming fight against Patricio. He's a very good fighter and a dangerous opponent. I think this fight will be a battle and the best man will be left standing with his arm raised.
Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect?
William: I have great respect for guys like Georges St-Pierre and Randy Couture. The reason being is that these guys are phenomenal athletes, fighters, and champions in many ways. A true martial artist is a respectable, honorable person while being humble at the same time. These guys fit those characteristics.
Darrick: Any words of advice for other individuals looking to compete in MMA?
William: My advice for people is to never be close-minded. This is mixed martial arts and you need to study various arts in order to succeed. The most important thing though that I believe is believing in yourself, and working hard and relentlessly to achieve your goals and dreams.
Darrick: Who are some of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up?
William: One of the people that had a great impact in my personal life would have to be my mother, Isabel. She struggled to raise three boys, most of the time on her own. Also, my step-dad Gus who helped put food on the table for three children that weren't his. Last but not least, all of my friends and foes that doubted me and didn't believe in me. They were fuel to my fire.
Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?
William: My greatest fulfillment in martial arts would have to be the discipline and honor involved in the sport. I'm a firm believer in Bushido - the way of the warrior.
Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests?
William: I enjoy working out, hanging out with friends, educating myself in human anatomy, nutrition, and traveling...although I haven't traveled much.
Darrick: What is your oldest memory?
William: I was about three or four years old back in Ecuador. I hadn't known my father until then and I remember seeing him for the very first time.
Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.
William: A lot of people don't know that I have competed in bodybuilding before.
Darrick: What comic book character do you relate to most?
William: The Incredible Hulk. The reason being is that if I snap, you're all fucked! (Laughs)
