10 Questions With Tyron Woodley (by Darrick Patrick)
Tyron "T-Wood" Woodley is a professional mixed martial artist who has competed in organizations such as Strikeforce, Respect Is Earned, Shooto, and Headhunter Productions. At the time of this very short interview, his next scheduled match is against Nathan Coy in Strikeforce at Strikeforce Challengers: ShoMMA 8 on May 21st, 2010.
Darrick: What was the road that led you to professional mixed martial arts competition?
Tyron: I was done with college wrestling and still had that competitive burn from not reaching my goal of being a national champion. I noticed that lots of wrestlers were doing well within mixed martial arts, so that's what initially got me into it.
Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect?
Tyron: Gilbert Melendez just got some respect from me for dominating Shinya Aoki and executing a perfect strategy. Miguel Torres, and GSP (until we meet). Also, Jon "Bones" Jones because he will try anything. He's really amazing to watch.
Darrick: Do you have any words of advice for other individuals looking to compete in MMA?
Tyron: Do your research on what gym to join. Be watchful of snakes and used car salesmen. Go at your own pace and don't give into pressure.
Darrick: Your next scheduled fight is against Nathan Coy on May 21st. What are your thoughts about this upcoming match?
Tyron: I think it's time for war. He is a hard-nose guy that has had tough fights with good opponents. I am preparing for him accordingly.
Darrick: Who is someone that greatly influenced you while growing up?
Tyron: My mother definitely had a lot of influence on me. She is a very strong woman. I learned how to endure at a young age.
Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?
Tyron: Seeing myself improve and become the complete package.
Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests?
Tyron: I like to play Rock Band and hang out with my son. He has the whole "bike-riding thing" down now and he just recently started flag football.
Darrick: What is your oldest memory?
Tyron: My oldest memories are from kindergarten and my teacher Mrs. Fish was always putting me in time-out. Or...oh, snap! I remember my friend and I getting into a fight in preschool because he used my toothbrush.
Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.
Tyron: I love God, I'm involved with several ministries, and I am about to get married. I'm completely opposite of the wild man you see in the cage.
Darrick: What moments in your life have you been proudest of so far?
Tyron: When my son is asking me faith-based questions, winning the Big 12 championship, graduating college, and finding the one God has for me.
