10 Questions With Mike Fleniken (by Darrick Patrick)
Mike "The Crazii Cajun" Fleniken is a professional mixed martial artist who has appeared in organizations such as Revolution Fight League, Fight To Win, and Hardrock MMA. At the time of this interview, his next scheduled match was originally intended to be against Luke Zachrich but will now be with Johnny Rees in Bellator Fighting Championships at BFC 23 on June 24th, 2010.
Darrick: What was the path that led you to competing professionally in mixed martial arts?
Mike: I have always competed in sports growing up and while I was in college. After college, I still had that competitive drive and I decided to give mixed martial arts a shot. I have not left the gym yet. It seems to fit me well.
Darrick: Any words of advice for other individuals looking to train in MMA?
Mike: If you want your dream to become reality, you have to be willing to put everything you have into the sport. You will only get out of it what you put into it.
Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect?
Mike: I would have to say that I show respect to anyone that has the marbles to get into the cage and agree to fight someone else. That gets my respect. One guy in particular though would be Georges St-Pierre for how he has evolved in the sport.
Darrick: Your next scheduled match was supposed to be with Luke Zachrich, but is now against Johnny Rees on June 24th. What are your thoughts about this upcoming fight?
Mike: Zachrich backed out earlier in the week, so they found me this fight with Johnny Rees. He is a well-rounded fighter with a lot of experience, but as a whole I think we match-up pretty well and we will put on a good show for the crowd.
Darrick: Where could you possibly see the future of the sport ten years from now?
Mike: The way the sport is evolving now, in ten years it could possibly be one of the most popular sports out there...which is great.
Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?
Mike: I'd have to say that going to the gym and learning all facets of the game is very fulfilling. The fun comes into play, you will learn something new every day with this sport.
Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests?
Mike: Baseball, football, hunting, fishing, and hanging out with family and friends.
Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.
Mike: Outside of everyone that already personally knows me, I would say that I am just a regular soft-hearted guy.
Darrick: If you had three wishes, what would they be?
Mike: The first wish would be for my family to be healthy. You can live an extremely fulfilling life when you're healthy. Wish number two is that I'd be the best that I can be at whatever I do in life. It gives you a great deal of self-satisfaction if you can succeed at something. My last wish would to be able to spend more time with my family that is back home. I am originally from Louisiana and I've been up in Kentucky working for over the last six years, so I do not get to see them as much anymore.
Darrick: What is your oldest memory?
Mike: One memory in general comes to mind. When I was young, I would give my little sister a wet willy to wake her up in the mornings. She would get so mad.
