10 Questions With John Gunderson (by Darrick Patrick)

John "Quick Guns" Gunderson is a professional mixed martial artist who has competed in organizations such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship, International Fight League, Ring Of Fire, Desert Brawl, Rage In The Cage, Palace Fighting Championship, MMA Xplosion, Sportfight, UCF, Gladiator Challenge, X Fighting Championships, Professional Fighting Association, Xtreme Ring Wars, Pacific Pankration Kickboxing Association, and Showdown In The Octagon. At the time of this very short interview, his next scheduled match is against Mark Holst in the Ultimate Fighting Championship at The Ultimate Fighter 11 Finale: Team Liddell vs. Team Ortiz on June 19th, 2010.

Darrick: What was the journey that led you to professional mixed martial arts competition?

John: I was doing good as an amateur, so I basically just decided to turn pro and get paid.

Darrick: Who are some of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up?

John: My mother had the most influence on me in my life. She was very tough on me. I was also a huge Mike Tyson fan.

Darrick: Do you have any words of advice for other individuals looking to compete in MMA?

John: Train in all of the areas of mixed martial arts first and make sure you are willing to dedicate your life to it while you're experiencing it firsthand.

Darrick: Your next scheduled fight is against Mark Holst on June 19th. What are your thoughts about this upcoming match?

John: Mark is a very skilled fighter, but this is the wrong time to fight me. I'm peaking and believe that I will finish him.

Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?

John: Just competing and being able to be a part of it all.

Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect?

John: I would have to say Rashad Evans, who I was never a fan of until I realized how hard he works. He is always the underdog and still works hard and gets the job done. Nick Diaz as well because of his work ethic, tough attitude, and his ability to fight.

Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests?

John: I mainly like to spend time with my family, particularly with my daughters. I love to be a part of their lives, especially with sports that they are into - like soccer.

Darrick: What is your oldest memory?

John: I remember going to elementary school in San Francisco and fighting the very first day because it was a real rough neighborhood.

Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.

John: I come from a very poor, hard-working family who have all passed away from many different ways. Most were in and out of trouble and I feel like I changed that trend with my children in the way that they are being raised.

Darrick: When you're no longer amongst the living, how would you most like to be remembered?

John: As a good father and a good friend.
