10 Questions With Kajan Johnson (by Darrick Patrick)

"Ragin" Kajan Johnson is a professional mixed martial artist who has appeared in organizations such as the Maximum Fighting Championship, King of the Cage, Heat XC, Extreme Fighting Challenge, Raw Combat, Xtreme MMA, Rites of Passage, TKO Major League MMA, Western Freestyle Championships, Slam Entertainment, Roadhouse Rumble, Xtreme Fighting Challenge, World Freestyle Fighting, Border Town Brawl, and Ultimate Ring Challenge. At the time of this interview, his next scheduled match is against Orestes Betran in the Maximum Fighting Championship at MFC 27: Breaking Point on November 12th, 2010.

Darrick: How did you end up competing professionally in mixed martial arts?

Kajan: Really, I've always loved martial arts. I have always been in competition, whether it was basketball, skateboarding, or cross-country skiing. Yes, I said cross-country skiing! My childhood dream was to be a ninja like Bruce Lee or the Karate Kid. One day in high school, a friend asked me if I wanted to go and train with these guys who were fighting no holds barred. I was like, "Hell yeah!" I started training with Bill Mahood and Travis Galbraith. I had my first fight after only two months of training. I knocked the guy out in 24 seconds and that was it, I was hooked.

Darrick: Any words of advice for other individuals looking to compete in MMA?

Kajan: If you are wanting to compete in mixed martial arts, be ready to sacrifice. It's a long, hard road to the top and it isn't easy.

Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect?

Kajan: I respect anyone who has the nuts to get in the cage and throw down, but Denis Kang, Bill Mahood, Ryan Ford, and GSP (Georges St-Pierre) are at the top of the list. Denis because of his perseverance, Bill since he is my main mentor and coach and I wouldn't be here without him, Ryan because of his hustle and money making ability, and GSP for his humility and honor.

Darrick: Your next scheduled match is against Orestes Betran on November 12th. What are your thoughts about this upcoming fight?

Kajan: This fight against Betran is perfect for me. I like to fight and this guy will bring it, so there's definitely going to be fireworks! I know that I have the tools to beat him and I'm going to give it my all. As long as I fight with my whole heart, I will not disappoint.

Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?

Kajan: I get the most fulfillment out of the sacrifices that I have to make. It feels great to push yourself to levels most people don't believe they are able to acheive. Sacrifice equals happiness, indulgence equals suffering.

Darrick: Who are some of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up?

Kajan: While growing up, I was highly influenced by my parents. My mother Rayanne Charlie, my father Granville Johnson, and my stepfather Chief Robert Charlie. They all taught me that I could accomplish anything I wanted, as long as I stayed motivated and was willing to work harder than everyone else. They are still my biggest support system.

Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests?

Kajan: Other than mixed martial arts, I love anything with a board. Snowboarding, skateboarding, wakeboarding, I love it all. I also love music, mostly Hip Hop, and I would one day like to put out an album or two. I've also been getting more into parkour and stunting lately. It makes me feel like a ninja!

Darrick: What is your oldest memory?

Kajan: My oldest memory is walking in the door of my first house in Burns Lake, British Columbia.

Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.

Kajan: I'm usually pretty honest in interviews and I've done my fair share, so I don't think there is much that anybody doesn't know about me. Maybe that when I was a kid, my mom made me do figure skating, ballet, and jazz dance. (Laughs)

Darrick: If you were the last person alive on Earth, what do you think you'd do to entertain yourself?

Kajan: I would probably do a lot of skateboarding and parkour.
