10 Questions With Nathan Murdock (by Darrick Patrick)
Nathan "No Mercy" Murdock is a professional mixed martial artist who has competed in organizations such as Bellator Fighting Championships, King of the Cage, Xtreme Fight Night, Pro Battle MMA, Extreme Fighting League, Blackeye Productions, Titan Fighting Championships, and Ultimate Combat Experience. At the time of this interview, his most recent match was against Josh Pulsifer at Xtreme Fight Night on November 12th, 2010.
Darrick: What was the road that led you to professional mixed martial arts competition?
Nathan: I've always loved watching MMA and enjoyed wrestling and boxing with my frends. When I was twenty years old, I went to live in Salt Lake City with my aunt and uncle. I found an amateur show there that aired on the local TV station. With zero training, I won my first fight against a hand-to-hand combat instructor for the Marines. I fell in love with the sport from then on and had about six more fights under my own instruction. Needless to say, I wasn't very technical. After I moved back to Arkansas I studied Judo under Dr. Dan Martin and shortly after that I found Inferno Martial Arts. That's when my training took a turn for the better. I'm currently still with IMA and have racked up a 14-8 professional record. We continue to evolve and improve every day.
Darrick: Do you have any words of advice for other individuals looking to compete in MMA?
Nathan: Have fun training and don't be in a huge hurry to fight. The arts must be respected and learned for one to be a mixed martial artist.
Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect?
Nathan: I have respect for anyone who is striving to push the sport in the right direction. By that I mean being intelligent assets to society and helping those around them become better people. Anderson Silva and Jose Aldo are two prime examples of that professionalism, and they are also extremely dangerous.
Darrick: Your most recent fight was against Josh Pulsifer on November 12th. What were your thoughts going into this match?
Nathan: Josh Pulsifer is a great wrestler and submission specialist. I knew that if I could keep the fight standing that I would win and I knocked him out with a head kick in the first round.
Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?
Nathan: Training hard with my Inferno family day in and day out.
Darrick: Who are some of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up?
Nathan: Ultimately my mother and father.
Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests?
Nathan: I really love to dance and sing.
Darrick: What comic book character do you relate to most?
Nathan: I don't know a whole lot about comics but if there was a hero that just loved having a good time and didn't like taking small matters too seriously, that would be me. I love to work hard, don't get me wrong, but most superheros are just too serious. It's probably an extremely stressful job though, so I understand.
Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.
Nathan: I pray every night and feel like I have a close relationship with God.
Darrick: What is your oldest memory?
Nathan: I remember running around my little neighborhood in California with my cowboy boots on when I was three years old.
