10 Questions With Kenny Foster (by Darrick Patrick)
Kenny Foster is a professional mixed martial artist who has appeared in organizations such as Bellator Fighting Championships, Extreme Fight Club, Urban Conflict Championships, True Cage Warriors, PA Fighting Championships, Cage Fighting Xtreme, American Steel Cagefighting, Elite Fighting Challenge, and World Cagefighting Alliance. At the time of this interview, his next scheduled match is against Eric Larkin in the first round of the fourth season featherweight tournament of Bellator Fighting Championships at BFC 37 on March 19th, 2011.
Darrick: What was the path that led you to competing professionally in mixed martial arts?
Kenny: I wrestled pretty much my whole life and have always loved competing. Aside from that, I was a wild child and a thrill-seeker growing up. I still had a desire to compete after wrestling and MMA just suited me.
Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect?
Kenny: Above all, my teammates. I know how hard they train and the work that they put in. Some iconic figures I respect are guys like Mark Kerr, Randy Couture, Chuck Liddell, and Quinton Jackson. Pioneers of the sport.
Darrick: Your next scheduled fight is against Eric Larkin on March 19th. What are your thoughts about this upcoming match?
Kenny: I'm very excited to mix it up with a wrestler of his pedigree. I think my wrestling is nothing to shake a stick at and translates well into MMA. So, if I can be the one to keep him guessing and dictate the fight, I'll be the victor on the 19th.
Darrick: Any words of advice for other individuals looking to compete in MMA?
Kenny: Yeah...learn how to play golf.
Darrick: Who are some of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up?
Kenny: My dad, who is a blue-collar union worker. He works his ass off to be a good provider for his family. My mother is one of the most unselfish people I've ever crossed as well. Also, a couple of my friends who were dealt some tough cards in their lives but continue to work hard and strive to be the best they can be, knowing it can always be worse.
Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?
Kenny: In terms of mixed martial arts, I would say it's the fact that it always provides a challenge. It's a roller coaster of hardships, but also of high reward. It always keeps you humble and striving to get better.
Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests?
Kenny: I enjoy the outdoors, traveling, and hanging out with friends and family.
Darrick: What is your oldest memory?
Kenny: Not my oldest memory, but here's an interesting one. About two years or so ago, I fought in a hockey arena. It was freezing and I just battled three rounds to win a unanimous decision. I limped back to an empty locker room. Prior to my fight, a friend of the team who is a holistic healer gave me a rub for bone bruises and injuries. It was a mix of tiger balm and other Chinese medicines. I rubbed myself with the medicine and hopped in the shower, first instincts being to grab my family jewels. When the medicine combined with the water it burned like hell. I dropped to my knees in the shower and was whimpering and yelling for help. Nobody came and I sat in the shower for about thirty minutes, where for some reason the lights were flickering on and off. Terrible experience.
Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.
Kenny: I watch a lot of girl's sports. Softball, volleyball, and soccer.
Darrick: What moments in your life have you been proudest of so far?
Kenny: Winning state titles in wrestling during my junior and senior years in high school. Also, fighting in the Bellator featherweight tournament!
