10 Questions With Derek Brunson (by Darrick Patrick)

Derek Brunson is a professional mixed martial artist who has competed in organizations such as Strikeforce, World Extreme Fighting, Carolina Fight Promotions, International Combat Entertainment, and Xtreme Fight Promotions. At the time of this short interview, his next scheduled match is against Lumumba Sayers at Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Henderson on July 30th, 2011.

Darrick: What was the road that led you to professional mixed martial arts competition?

Derek Brunson: I was a college wrestler at UNCP (University of North Carolina at Pembroke). It's a Division II school and I was a 3-time All-American in college. I turned to mixed martial arts after my college career was over.

Darrick: Who are some of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up?

Derek Brunson: My mom is a strong lady and she has been very influential to me. My two daughters, Ziara and Kiara, give me drive and focus.

Darrick: Do you have any words of advice for other individuals looking to compete in MMA?

Derek Brunson: The advice I have to offer is to train hard and continue to push yourself daily.

Darrick: Your next scheduled fight is against Lumumba Sayers on July 30th. What are your thoughts about this upcoming match?

Derek Brunson: Lumumba is a strong, dangerous slugger with the ability to submit opponents. I'm looking towards a good fight.

Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect?

Derek Brunson: Rashad Evans, Frankie Edgar, Georges St-Pierre (GSP), and Clay Guida. They are all true professionals.

Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?

Derek Brunson: Training at Jackson's MMA and Renzo Gracie NYC with the best in the game and with the best coaches. You can't go wrong with that.

Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests?

Derek Brunson: Sports - I'm a big sports guy. I can watch just about any sport. I also love to hang out with my friends and party. With that said, I'm into partying without drugs and alcohol. I am high on life 24/7.

Darrick: When you're no longer amongst the living, how would you most like to be remembered?

Derek Brunson: As a great dad, hard worker, and the best middleweight fighter ever.

Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.

Derek Brunson: I have never smoked or consumed any alcohol in my life.

Darrick: What is your oldest memory?

Derek Brunson: I just remember growing up struggling. Now, I'm at a point where I'm doing okay. I am always looking to better myself daily though.
