10 Questions With Brett Oteri (by Darrick Patrick)
Brett Oteri is a professional mixed martial artist who has appeared in organizations such as Reality Fighting, Combat Zone, Moosin, and Cage Fighting Xtreme. At the time of this interview, his next scheduled match is against Ryan Quinn in Bellator Fighting Championships at BFC 48 on August 20th, 2011.
Darrick: How did you end up competing professionally in mixed martial arts?
Brett: I began taking Karate when I was five years old and then started wrestling in middle school. While in college, I worked on boxing at Petronelli's in Brockton, Massachusetts. I was very excited to get a chance to put it all together, so I took an amateur fight a few years ago.
Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect?
Brett: I respect any fighter that steps into the cage to challenge himself or herself. One thing that really bugs me though is people taking fights with people that are not at their level, just to look like a good fighter by punishing a lower-level competitor.
Darrick: Any words of advice for other individuals looking to compete in MMA?
Brett: If you want to get started in mixed martial arts, I suggest you join a good gym with real quality instruction. Being tough is important, but skills are what will take you down the right path.
Darrick: Your next scheduled match is against Ryan Quinn on August 20th. What are your thoughts about this upcoming fight?
Brett: Ryan Quinn is a very good guy. He offered me this fight when another local guy backed out to take another great opportunity. He wants a challenging opponent and I respect that very much. I look forward to competing with him - and after that, training with him!
Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?
Brett: I enjoy the training more than anything. Some athletes complain about the hard work of training. I am the opposite. I would be okay just training all the time and gaining more skills. However, the competition allows you to know how you are progressing.
Darrick: Who are some of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up?
Brett: My parents in very different ways. My mother in the analytical way, teaching me to break things down and find the best route to success. My father introduced me to martial arts and gave me the passion to study them and someday teach myself.
Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests?
Brett: Spending time with my family is my number one focus in life. We have been blessed with a new baby girl and she is more than I could have imagined. I want to be a great husband and father. That is something I can be proud of when looking back.
Darrick: What is your oldest memory?
Brett: Getting stung on the eyelid by a bee in our front yard. I was two or three years old.
Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.
Brett: I am a former pro bodybuilder and an elite level triathlete. Like I said, I love to train!
Darrick: If you were the last person alive on Earth, what do you think you'd do to entertain yourself?
Brett: I would travel the world as best I could and write down all that I saw, hoping that more people would come later and have something to read.
