Spore Sales Skyrocket Beyond One Million
One million sales translates to over 25 million in-game creations.

EA has finally revealed the initial sales figures for Spore, the Maxis-developed game of intergalactic evolution. Between reports of rampant piracy and flat out protest, things were looking pretty grim for Will Wright's self-proclaimed "Sim Everything". It doesn't look like consumer backlash did much to slow this sales juggernaut, though; Spore has sold over a million copies since its worldwide release on September 7.

Compared to the 1.5 million that Star Wars: The Force Unleashed recently sold -- in just five days, no less -- you might come away from this news a bit unimpressed. Consider this: The Force Unleashed's sales figures were accounted for across virtually every platform under the stars -- from PS2 to 360. Remember that Spore is only available on PC/Mac and DS, and the significance of those numbers is suddenly a whole lot more apparent.

The company also mentioned that the Spore community has cranked out over 25 million in-game creations. Executive producer Lucy Bradshaw is more than pleased with the staggering ingenuity of Spore's fan base, commenting, "We're humbled by how quickly the community has taken to the creativity tools in Spore," continuing, "It's amazing to see the sheer imagination represented in the hundreds of thousands of creatures, vehicles and buildings that have been uploaded around the clock since launch."

While we seriously doubt EA would ever reveal exactly how much money they spent just making the game, we'd really like to know how long it will take for them to break even -- if they haven't already, that is. Aside from Spore's already impressive retail numbers, the ads on the Sporepedia community site have got to be generating some serious revenue at this point.
