'Battle Under The Stars'

Saturday, August 02, 2008
Jim 'Smitty' Smith and Poor Boys Pro Boxing have teamed up with local MMA power promoter, Sven Bean to bring you no less than 11 bouts on a card entitled "Battle Under The Stars".

BOXING BOUTS:

The main event will pit Colorado's Victor Villareal against tough veteran Patrick 'Head Hunter' Thompson from Nebraska. The bout will be an 8 rounder for the Colorado/Nebraska States title at super middleweight. The title will be recognized by both the Colorado and Nebraska state boxing commissions as well as the Association of Boxing Committee (ABC).

The chief support bout will be a rematch between welterweights Brad Jackson and Julio Lanzas, who fought to a draw in March. Jairo Delgado will take on 25 fight veteran Javier Segura in only his second start as a pro. Delgado is certainly one to watch for. Rounding out the boxing portion of the card is John Kiser against Jose Beltran and the much anticipated debut of Tommy Atencio. Atencio was an outstanding amateur in the Colorado boxing scene with many state, regional and national titles to his credit.

On the MMA side Sven Bean will present 6 bouts in his 'Battle Quest' series.

MMA FEATURE BOUTS:

There will be three solid MMA matches at the event featuring fighters from Colorado, Arizona, and South Dakota.

In a light heavyweight bout New York transplant Ken Kreuscher takes on Battlequest veteran Coy Sasse. Kreuscher is 1-1 in MMA and 1-0 in Muay Thai. All of wins have come by way of Knockout. He has trained with the likes of Renzo Gracie, Nate Marquardt and Kru Phil Nurse. Coy Sasse hails from Rapid City, South Dakota and is well rounded fighter out of Dynamic Martial Arts and is trained by veteran fighter/coach Josh Usera. Sasse made his debut at the Battlequest 8 event where he dispatched Rory O'Farrel in the first round. Sasse also has a 2-0 amateur boxing record.

In a battle of welter weights Ralston Baker clashes with Justin Gaethje. Baker is a very skilled MMA fighter, with a solid amateur boxing background. He is trained by Adam Martinez of Infinite Martial Arts, a Royce Gracie Affiliate academy. Baker is one of the top ranked up and coming welterweights on the ROF/BQ roster. Baker will be facing an amazing athlete in Justin Gaethje. Gaethje compiled a record of 191-9 wrestling at Stafford High School in Arizona, where he was a four-time regional champion, and twice named team captain. He is a two time Arizona State Champion. Also a standout football player, Gaethje won three varsity letters on the gridiron, and was named 1st Team and 1st State All-Region Defensive Back, as well as making the All-Star Team.

In the first MMA bout of the evening two lightweights will make their debut as submission stylist Justin Griffis locks up with wrestler Rocco Depaolo. Griffis is a Brazilian Jiujitsu blue belt under Mauricio Zingano. Depaolo is a Colorado state runner up and is part of the UNC wrestling squad.

MUAY THAI BOUTS:

The fight card will also feature 3 women's Muay Thai matches.

In the feature bout Lauren Sugihara faces Jessica Hollenback. Sugihara is better known as DJ Ms. Vicious, one of the most sought after DJ's in the industry. She is known for her looks, something that has garnered attention from Playboy, but she can also fight. She is currently 2-0 in Muay Thai and will be looking to enter in to the MMA scene in the future. She is trained by the legend Clarence Thatch of 3-D Martial Arts. Jessica Hollenback is 1-0 and comes out of the Colorado Muay Thai camp. She has the most technically sound Muay Thai coach in the region, Oscar Martinez, in her corner.

La Boxing's Christina Kaneesal (1-1) will face off against Colorado Muay Thai's Rachel Sahlberg (2-0). Both girls are known for there toe-to-toe non stop style and should be a crowd pleaser.

And to kick off the night, Sarah Padilla (0-1) of Denver will face debut fighter Danyella Hogle at 132-137 lbs.

FIGHTS UNDER THE STARS

The event will take place Saturday, August 2nd outside at Softball Country.

Come watch 11 exciting Mauy Thai, MMA and Pro Boxing matches under the stars. Grab a cold one, and enjoy the fresh air and fights! The gates will open at 7:00 pm and the first bout will start promptly at 8:15 pm.

Softball Country is located at 2101 W 64th Avenue. It is just a few blocks west of Pecos on 64th.

EFX August 23rd

EFX August 23rd

EFX Presents….. TOTAL DESTRUCTION

Colorado fight fans be prepared for a night of fights and fun….

EFX made its debut in Colorado last November with a solid card and a great showing. We are back after working out some of the kinks in the promotion business and look to bring you the same entertainment as last November.

We will begin the evening with two Women squaring off in Women’s Muay Thai.
At 110lbs Laura Schiavone fighting out of Augie’s Art of War 0-0
vs. Diana Rael fighting out of Serialboxe 0-0

These two ladies both come from reputable schools here in Colorado, known for their striking and athleticism. Look for this fight to be fast paced in this sub-bantam weight division. Both ladies will be pressing the action and trying to end the fight early.

The rest of the fights will me Men’s MMA.

For the first MMA fight of the evening we will be starting with some lightweight action.

At 155lbs Travis Hollis fighting out of Gumm MMA 1-0 vs. 155 Dan Craft fighting out of Next Level Sports 0-0 MMA.

Both fighters have 16+ years of wrestling experience, so look for huge slams and ground and pound in this fight. Again, both fighters are coming out of great schools. This fight will be action packed all 3 rounds assuming it makes it that far. Both fighters are going to be aggressive and non stop in each others face.

125 lbs Josh Kissel fighting out ofImpact Boxing 0-1 vs. Kyle Robinson fighting out of WKC MMA 0-0

Josh Kissel made his debut earlier this year with what seemed to be one sided fight until he was caught in a submission halfway through the third round. Kyle Robinson has been training in striking since he was a child. Don’t be surprised if these two guys slug it out the entire fight, or until one of them gets caught. Both fighters are natural athletes and being that they are in the lightest weigh division possible for Men’s MMA, you will have to try not to blink, or you may miss what happens

160lbs Bruce Ries fighting out of Pacific Warriors 1-1 vs EJ Howe fighting out of Freedom Fighters 1-1

EJ Howe is not new to competition, a standout wrestler all through high school. EJ is training with a long standing gym with training partners that will prepare him for what ever happens in a fight. Bruce Ries is out of a school not many have heard of, but will know more about after Saturday night.

170lbs Troy Barron fighting out of Independent 0-1 vs. Jay Wymer fighting out of Next Level Sports 0-2

Troy Barron is the Randy Couture of Colorado. I mean this is the sense of age, not competitive past’s. Troy is a man in his 40’s competing and what is called a young mans game. Make no mistake, Troy is in top physical condition and not just for his age. Troy and is opponent Jay both look to shake off the “first fights jitters” both men display much more skill than their records show. Look for both men to come out “guns ablazen”.

155lbs Brian Scott fighting out of Serialboxe & WKC 0-0 vs. 155 Matt Martin Galvin fighting out of Pacific Warriors 0-0 MMA

Not much is none about either of these fighters making there debut on the 23rd however, you can be assured they will both have something to prove being their first fight. One thing to mention is the reach difference with this fight, Brian Scott is an extremely tall lightweight fighter at 6’3”, with a similar build to Corey Hill (UFC) lightweight.

145lbs Nick Macias fighting out of Gumm MMA 2-0 vs. 145 Josh Hubber fighting out of Fight Factory 9-3 MMA

Josh “Hell Boy” Hubber is not new fighter on the local MMA scene here in Colorado. Josh is a true competitor in the sport and someone who brings a tough fight to all of his opponents. Josh is almost reminiscent of the “old school” of MMA. Josh naturally walks around at 150-152lbs however, most of his first fights were at 155lbs fighting much bigger and stronger opponents, but still manage to compile an 11-3 record. One thing about Josh is he is deceptively will rounded, he tends to KO most of his opponents however, is proficient in grappling as well with a few submission victories. Also, Josh has a chin of STEEL, he has proved this on more than one occasion with taking (what most would consider) fight ending strikes, but the guy just keeps coming. As for his opponent Nick Macias. Nick comes out of 2 time UFC Veteran Brad Gumms, Gumm MMA. Nick has only 2 fights to his record, but do no let this fool you. Nick is willing to step up and fight anyone, with any record is his weight division showing what kind of a fight he will bring. Macias is 2-0 with both victories coming by way of submission within minutes of the first round. It is rumored that he has been working on his striking extensively so maybe this fight is a 3 round war, or someone gets staggered early in the fight. Either way, look for this fight to be one to remember.

For our first title fight of the night.

145lbs Joey Banks fighting out of T’s KO 2-2 vs. Nicky Babb fighting out of Independent 3-0 MMA
Men’s Amateur Featherweight Title

Joey Banks was a standout featherweight in 2006-2007 taking fights with anyone in his weight class leading to some mismatched fights. That is not to say Joey does not poses the skill set to do big things in this sport. Joey did what most fighters should do after jumping into the sport a little too soon. Joey decided that the best thing for him would be to take a step back and focus on his technical training. Joey has now been training under the tutelage of Christian Allen our of T’s KO. He has now been there for the last year and half refining his skills and believe you me, Joey will be a completely different fighters come August 23rd. He will be facing off against a tough opponent in Nicky Babb. Unfortunately not much is known about Babb locally as he just moved here from out of state. Babb is 3-0 as a featherweight and finish’s all of his opponents as quickly as the fight starts. In the end, only of these two guys will be crowned EFX Featherweight Champion.

Moving onto the Professional section of the card….

205lbs James Funny fighting out of Fight Factory 5-0 vs. 205 Brian Cristina fighting out of The House of Martial Arts 5-3 MMA Men’s Professional Light Heavyweight Title

James Funny and Brian Cristina have to be two of the nicest, down to earth guys you could ever meet, I mean outside of the cage of course. Both fighters are Veterans of the local MMA Scene. James Funny poses a well rounded threat to Cristina as he is comfortable no matter where the fight goes. Cristina on the other hand has strength and punching power on his side. Both fighters will be prepared to go the distance and see who is still standing in the end.

Of course for our main event……

155 lbs Cameron “Money Man” Dollar fighting out of Fight Factory vs. Luke Holdorf fighting out of Independent.

Again, both fighters are veterans of the sport and local MMA scene. Each fighter poses strengths against the other. Holdorf who has uncountable submission victories under his belt will look to finish this fight with one of his many submission out of his arsenal and will come into this fight in great shape. Luke is also well versed in striking and is comfortable exchanging with anyone. Dollar is a High school wrestler with great takedowns, and equal takedown defense. Dollar is also a game player in submissions and striking, with many knock outs to his record. This fight is bound to be a war of attrition.

Look forward to seeing you all there.

A few of us went last night and it was decent. $5 for a PBR Beer was a little high and the TV's showing the fights around the arena had HDTV from 1960's.

Good Action in the cage though!
