Rocky Mountain Bad Boyz "Battle of the Belts" (01/23/09) RESULTS!!
By JR Gordon

Friday night, January 23, 2009, Red and Jerry's hosted a night of caged combat for the Rocky Mountain Bad Boyz. The show titled, "Battle of the Belts" played out in front of a packed house and the fighters did not disappoint.

The main event of the night featured Colorado fighter Nic Buschman Vs Nebraska based grappling phenom Nic Honstein in the only professional bout on the card. The fight was contested for the RMBB 135 lb. MMA professional title. Honstein worked to get it to the ground early by initiating the takedown, but Buschman landed in top position. However, the referee stood the fighters and took away the positional advantage from Buschman as he had grabbed the cage on the takedown. Honstein again quickly shot for the takedown but again Buschman ended up on top and he worked brief GNP before letting Honstein stand. Honstein again clinched, then pulled guard to get the fight to the ground again. This time off of his back Honstein locked in a Teepee choke (a triangle choke, but with the legs straight and the instead of figure foured) and when Buschman tapped out Honstein became the RMBB professional 135lb. champion.

Alfredo Corona faced Anthony Werner for the RMBB 155 lb. amateur MMA title. Werner got the early takedown and on the ground each fighter was able to sweep the other in the battle for position. Werner escaped a deep guillotine attempt, but Corona was then able to get an armbar from guard and he got the title winning tapout victory at 2:07 of round one.

Tony Miller faced Phil Salazar for the RMBB 125 lb. amateur MMA title. Round one saw even action when standing with Miller getting the takedown and working GNP to end the round. Round two saw Miller press the action standing before again scoring a double leg takedown and working GNP for most of the round. Round three was fantastic stand up action from both fighters until Miller took it to the ground to end the round. After the scores were given the title went to Miller by an unanimous decision.

EJ Howe faced Doug Saiz in a 155 lb. bout. Howe scored two big slams early in round one and tried for an ankle lock that Saiz defended. In round two Howe got a hip toss takedown and after taking full mount he secured the TKO GNP victory at 1:35 of round two.

Josiah Callis faced Adam Limon in a 155 lb. bout. Callis landed several hard leg kicks early; then after spinning part way around off of a missed kick he spun back toward Limon and caught him with a backfist. The strike landed solid and got Callis the KO victory at :19 of round one.

Matt Cox faced Adam Soto in a 170 lb. bout. In round one Cox got two takedowns and some GNP while Soto scored with a nice sweep. Round two had Cox losing a point early in the round for grabbing the fence. In the end however Cox was able to again take it to the ground and from back control he worked his GNP attack to get the TKO win at 2:47 of round two.

Matt Gutierrez faced Reid Delman in a 150 lb. bout. Delman got the takedown early in the first round and on the ground he worked between GNP and RNC attempts while Gutierrez defended the choke(s). Round two again had Delman taking it to the ground and with a fight ending GNP flurry from back control he secured the TKO win at 2:23 of round two.

Bogie Ison faced Xavier Saccomanno in a 205 lb. bout. Saccomanno got a takedown and worked to full mount. He was able to keep Ison from reversing him and after working GNP he took back control and scored with more GNP that set up the fight winning RNC at 2:05 of round one.

Ryan Martinez faced Shawn Martin in a 265 lb. bout. Martinez took control early with a flurry of well placed head punches that had the referee stopping the bout and giving him the TKO win at :19 of round one.

Adrian Drospero faced Victor Gomez in a 155 lb. bout. There was an early even exchange of strikes from the fighters before Gomez landed flush with a well timed combination that gave him the KO win at :55 of round one.

Jason Lee faced Bryan Scraper in a 189 lb. Muay Thai bout. This match went all three rounds. Round one was a striking slugfest that was easily one of the best Muay Thai rounds seen in Colorado in a long time. Round two was even better with Scraper pulling ahead slightly and throwing repeated head kicks. Round three had Scraper taking a few moments to recover from an unintentional low blow before coming back with marked aggression to end the match. In the end the win went to Scraper by way of unanimous decision.

"Of the night moments"

Chin of the night goes to Jason Lee for the punches and head kicks that he absorbed, yet kept coming forward throughout the fight.

Slams of the night go to EJ Howe for his big double leg takedown followed quickly by his armbar escape slam.

Knockout of the night goes to Josiah Callis for his half spinning backfist off of a missed kick that got him the KO win.

Submission of the night goes to Nic Honstein for his unique leg choke to win him the title.

Fight of the night goes to Tony Miller and Phil Salazar for three rounds of entertaining action that encompassed all aspects of MMA.

Best in Health and Training, J. R. Gordon.

MMA's Top Coaches Come To Denver

Come train in a serene environment with the Top Coaches in MMA!

DAVE CAMARILLO (coach of John Fitch, Josh Koscheck, etc.)

GREG JACKSON (coach of Gerorge St.Pierre, Rashad Evans, etc.)

SHAWN TOMPKINS (coach of Randy Couture, Wanderlei Silva, etc.)

MARK DELLAGROTTE (coach of Kenny Florian, Marcus Davis, etc.)

RICARDO LABORIO (coach of Mike Brown, Thiago Alves, etc.)

As much as any sport, mixed martial arts fans have a high rate of participation in the martial arts that make up the sport they love to watch. Most will never rise to the level of their favorite fighters, but many still want to take part in the same training as the fighters they follow.

Maybe more than any other sport, MMA trainers themselves are becoming a highly regarded quantity, particularly trainers like Greg Jackson (who trains fighters like Georges
St. Pierre, Rashad Evans, Keith Jardine, and Nate Marquardt) or Mark DellaGrotte (who trains Kenny Florian, Marcus Davis, and Patrick Cote).

Unlike most other sports, there are opportunities in MMA to train with the superstar
fighters and the coaches that train them. Paradise Warrior Retreat for years has organized retreat-type seminars that allow local fighters, fight fans, and martial artists to train with elite fighters and coaches in a setting that is part fantasy camp and part training seminar.

Paradise Warrior Retreat kicks off its next tour - which includes five major U.S. cities - on March 13 in Dana Point, Calif. (just south of Los Angeles). This tour features five of the most sought after trainers in MMA. The aforementioned Greg Jackson and Mark DellaGrotte will be part of the tour, as will American Top Team's Ricardo Liborio (trainer to Thiago Alves and Mike Brown), Xtreme Couture coach Shawn Tompkins (trainer to fighters like Randy Couture and Vitor Belfort), and Dave Camarillo of American Kickboxing Academy (who trains fighters like Jon Fitch, Josh Koscheck, and Mike Swick).

Following Dana Point, the tour will continue on to Westminster, Colo. (near Denver);
Boston; Chicago; and Miami. Paradise Warrior Retreat has been putting on seminars throughout the U.S. and Canada since 2004. Past instructors have included the likes of Chuck Liddell, Matt Hughes, B.J. Penn, Matt Serra, Dan Henderson, Cung Le, Renato "Babalu" Sobral, and many others.

The seminar is a highly personal environment that allows personal interaction with
all of the instructors.

3 Day Seminar at one of Denver's most beautiful hotels, The Westin Westminster.

3 days of great training. Group morning runs along the famous Flat Irons hills. Special events such as group dinner with coaches and celebrity fighters, celebrity fighter autograph sessions, VIP party with coaches and celebrity fighters.

To be the BEST, you have to train with the BEST!!

March 20-22, 2009. Choose from individual days or come for all 3!!!

SPACE IS LIMITED

TAPOUT, KBPI 106.7 and TRAINING DAY present:

RING OF FIRE 34: JUDGMENT DAY!!.

The 13 bout MMA event will take place on Saturday, April 11th,2009 at the Broomfield
Event Center in Broomfield, Colorado.

MAIN EVENT:

In the main event bout of the evening, UFC veteran Alvin KID Robinson returns to Colorado for the first time in two years.

A four time UFC veteran, Robinson is known as one of the slickest ground fighters in the sport. His biggest career victory came when he defeated Jorge Gurgel at UFC 77 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Robinson holds the rank of Black Belt under the legendary Royce Gracie and is also a former All American wrestler. He won and defended the ROF Light Weight Championship three times. Robinson was sidelined during training for ROF 33, but is now injury free and ready to get back in the cage.

"On April 11th I make my return to 145lbs division. The 145lbs division is stacked and I can't wait to fight the best."

"Its honor to be fighting on Ring of Fire again, the show that started my career. I also can't wait to fight in front of my hometown crowd here in Colorado. The fans here are very loyal and supportive and I plan on putting on a great fight for them. I have big plans for 2009 and they all start at Ring Of Fire 34. I feel great! I'm 100% healthy and ready to go."

Robinson's opponent, Anthony Morrison was raised in the rough streets of Philadelphia, PA. Morrison has literally fought for a better way of life. He is a powerful fighter that started his career training out of his grandmother's basement, literally. Morrison has been
training with Team Combat for the past year (the camp that brought up Amir Sadollah) to improve his game. Anthony is moving down from 155lbs to 145lbs. He feels at that weight, he will be a handful for any opponent.

"Alvin is tough opponent and I'm stepping into his back yard for this fight... I like being the underdog and I think the pressure is on him.

This fight means a lot to me and I have faced tough opponents like Alvin before. I am going to prove to myself and everyone that I belong here.

I don't think Alvin will want to stand with me so I'm obviously gonna try keep him where he is not comfortable.

If it stays on the feet I will KO him. If it goes to the ground I'm looking to pound him out.

I am very excited to fight with Ring Of Fire! Some of the best fighters in the country have come up through this promotion..and to the ROF fans ..I wont disappoint!!.

FEATURE BOUTS:

In the main feature bout of the evening UFC veteran BIG Mike Nickels returns to the cage. Nickels is a BJJ stylist with a 6-2 record and was featured on season 3 of Spike TV's Ultimate Fighter. BIG Mike was last seen in action at ROF 32, where he displayed text book technique in finishing Sebian boxer Vladimir Vuckovic early in the first round.

At ROF 34, Nickels will face the top up and coming light heavyweight in the region, James Funny. Funny has a very impressive 10-2 MMA record. He is known for both his KO power as well as brute strength on the mat. Funny is looking for a win over the
UFC vet to launch his career.

The undercard is stacked as UFC vet Luke LIL HULK Caudillo returns to action against Army Combatives instructor Josh Arocho. The 145 lb

Young Guns belt will be on the line as Tyler THUNDER Toner takes on the 4-2 Dee Jay
Fuentes of Matt Hughes HIT Squad camp. Fabian The FREAK Acuna makes his long awaited return as he squares up against K-1 and Contender Asia star James Martinez.. Undefeated Heavyweight and Golden Gloves Champion Brendan Schaub looks to go 5-0, but standing in his way is Montengro MMA Champion Bojan Spalevic. In a battle of brawlers fan favorite Kenneth Seegrist will clash with Ed Banks to open the main card portion of the evening.

There will be six preliminary matches starting at 6:30, highlighted by Cody Frederickson of Jacksons MMA taking on Easton BJJ's Chandler Holderness. The remaing bouts feature some of the most promising young fighters on the circuit.
