KICK DOWN 64 Results!

Sunday, May 10, 2009 - by J.R. Gordon

DENVER – The sixty-fourth show of the Kick Down promotion took place at the Red Lion Hotel on Saturday night. There were four titles on the line, one of them being in the professional division.

The show was titled "Fearless." Show titles always speak toward the fighters and their attributes. In this case, however, the name more appropriately is applied to promoter Steve Alley and his family. For a touching speech, there were several generations of the Alley family that made their way into the cage. Their purpose was to pay homage to Joyce Alley; Steve, Kevin and Gene Alley's mother who passed away the day before the event following her rather abrupt battle with cancer. Truly it was touching to see the family so very fearless in the face of adversity in continuing on with the show in this time of sorrow.

In the main event, Colby Snyder fought Jose Luis Murillo for the Kick Down professional lightweight title. Round one was filled with spectacular striking from both fighters with each hurting the other. The round ended with Snyder knocking Murillo down and finishing the round with ground and pound. Round two saw both fighters again using their striking prowess to hurt the other. In the end, however, it was a combination of punches, knees and kicks that Snyder used to hurt Murillo before landing the right hook that knocked Murillo out cold. Snyder kept his title with the KO coming at 2:28 of round two.

Chris Dollbaum and Shaun Ogle battled for the Kick Down amateur middleweight title. Round one was almost all ground action with Dollbaum working ground and pound, while Ogle was very active with submission attempts. Round two saw Dollbaum land a strong punch flurry before getting the takedown and working groud and pound, as Ogle continued to threaten with submission attempts off of his back. Round three had Dollbaum again flurrying well with punches before getting the takedown. Ogle was able to get a reversal and he worked ground and pound and rear naked choke attempts to end the round. When asked to score the bout, the judges saw it as a unanimous decision title earning victory for Chris Dollbaum.

Nathan Gates faced Dominic Montoya for the Kick Down amateur featherweight title. Both fighters landed good strikes early, followed by Montoya scoring two takedowns, but it was Gates that ended the round on top working his ground and pound after scoring a sweep. Round two had the fighters engage in a standing scramble for position. Gates took back control by jumping onto the back of Montoya while standing. From there he set in the rear naked choke – a la Matt Hughes versus Frank Trigg – pulled Montoya over backward, and got the title winning submission at 1:01 of round two.

Mike Van Houten and Sean McPeck fought for the Kick Down amateur welterweight MMA title. Most of round one saw Van Houten work for the takedown while McPeck defended well. Toward the end of the round Van Houten got it to the mat and finished the round with ground and pound. Round two saw Van Houten again get the takedown and after passing guard he took side control, took full mount then worked ground and pound until he got the TKO win and the title at 2:23 of round two.

Title bouts (Professional):
-Cobly Snyder def. Jose Luis Murillo by KO (Punch) at 2:28, R2

Title bouts (Amateur):
-Chris Dollbaum def. Shaun Ogle by Unanimous Decision, R3
-Nathan Gates def. Dominic Montoya by Submission (Rear Naked Choke) at 1:01, R2
-Mike Van Houten def. Sean McPeck by TKO (Strikes) at 2:23, R2

Non-title bouts (Amateur):
-Kevin Wirth defeated Andrew Watts by TKO at 1:34 of round two.
-Ben Bradley defeated Manuel Miera by TKO at 1:53 of round three
-Byron Sowell defeated Josh Childress by TKO at 2:03 of round 2.
-John Zahn defeated John McDermott by RNC at :52 of round one.
-Troy Mumme defeated Kevin Silva by TKO at 1:43 of round two.
-Josh Kissell defeated Jose Marin by armbar 2:34 of round two.
-Brandon Goshorn defeated Jeremy Dittmer by TKO at 3:00 of round two.

Of the night moments:

Submission of the night goes to Nathan Gates for getting his fight winning rear naked choke set in by way of jumping to his opponent's back while standing.

Ground and pound of the night goes to Brandon Goshorn for rendering his opponent unable to continue at the end of the second round.

Slam of the night goes to John Zahn for cage rattling bodylock slam.

Knockout of the night goes to Colby Snyder for his title retaining right hook knockout.

Several matches provided the action, excitement and entertainment to be called fight of the night. First, Jose Marin and Josh Kissell had a great battle, but then Chris Dollbaum and Shaun Ogle fought a back and forth fight that impressed everyone in the crowd. Then not to be outdone, the main event of the evening saw Colby Snyder and Jose Luis Murillo put on a clinic in striking, toughness and showing a "never say quit" desire while working to take home the belt. At one point, the doctor had to check both fighters to make sure they were okay to continue; fortunately for the fans they were and we got to see a decisive end to the bout.

Each of those bouts garnered careful consideration for fight of the night honors. In the end, however, it is the Alley family that gets fight of the night as well as the respect of everyone in attendance by going through with the show as a means of honoring Joyce Alley. Truly they all fought through much more on Saturday night than anyone should have to; and they did it to honor Joyce and to remain fearless in the face of the ultimate adversity.

Reprinted below are the sentiments expressed by the Alley family:

"A wonderful Mother. Kind, considerate, an individual who always put others before herself and appreciated the simpler things in life. Her children, family, and friends will miss her dearly. Gone but never forgotten."

To the Alley family, from the entire Martial Arts community, please accept our heartfelt and sincerest wishes in remembering the wonderful woman whom you got to call Mom.
