Superior Cage Combat 4 *Results*

Postby keithlewis » Sat Feb 18, 2012 12:12 am

John Gunderson became the inaugural SCC Lightweight Champion with a third-round victory over Justin Buchholz. In the Main Event of the night, a match-up of former UFC Middleweights, Jay Silva choked out Kendall Grove in the second round.

This was definitely the best SCC event so far. Seven amazing fights, that all should be included in the event highlight video. To kick off the event, Jimmy “Handsome” Jones scored a late submission victory against Brazilian prospect Joao Victor. Heavy-handed Walt “Big Ticket” Harris after that knocked out previously undefeated Anthony Hamilton, in their heavyweight bout.

Brandon Bender improved his perfect record to 9-0 with a submission win over Marlin “Shorty Weikel” in the third bout of the night. Bender and Weikel earned “Fight of the Night” honors for their amazing battle that brought the crowd to its feet.

After three fights with non-stop action, it was time for the four bouts of the Main Card. And the action continued. Anderson Silva-trained Brazilian Paulo Bananada won by decision over very solid fighter Dominique Robinson, and has now won 11 (!) straight fights. Another fighter that improved his win-streak is TUF 11 vet Jamie “The Chosen 1” Yager that then entered the cage. Yager won his fourth straight fight with a clear unanimous decision victory over Vegas local, and former Strikeforce fighter, Danny “Dee1” Davis Jr. This was Yager’s first fight in the Welterweight division.

In our co-main event of the night, John Gunderson became the SCC Lightweight Champion after putting on an impressive performance. Late in the third round he caught Buchholz with a kimura after initially being taken to the ground. Another great fight, by two fighters that in the pre-fight interviews both stated that they were in the best shape of their lives. Gunderson immediately offered Buchholz a re-match, and we will now have to see when, and against whom, the 32-year-old gets to defend his belt.

‘Non-stop-action’ was the theme of the night. Jay Silva and Kendall Grove definitely lived up to the expectations in the main event, and there was no time to blink. First round started off with a front kick to the body by Grove. Silva came back with some vicious kicks, but it’s a close first round after Grove getting a late takedown, and both fighters staying very active on their feet trading punches. Again, crowd is on their feet after a great first round. In the second round Silva catches Grove early with a left hook, and goes after him as Grove (as Joe Gugelman calls it) is on roller skates, he takes Grove’s back and locks a rear-naked-choke. Grove taps, for the first time in his fighting career, and Jay Silva is the SCC 4 Main Event winner!

We were happy to see UFC President Dana White in the house, and also big name fighters such as Anderson Silva, Randy Couture, Urijah Faber, Frank Mir, Chad Mendes, Brad Tavares, Vinny Magalhaes, Jay Hieron, Martin Kampmann, Tom Lawlor, Keith Jardine, and many more. Thank you all for coming out!
