Howard, Rehm Ready for Battle at CES MMA
Once tonight’s highly-anticipated main event between John “Doomsday” Howard and Scott Rehm is over with, Howard promises nothing will change his cordial relationship with Rehm.
“We’ll probably grab a beer afterward, maybe party, etc., etc.,” Howard said. “We’re going to have fun. This is what we do for a living. It’s a business. It’s not personal.”
Howard (16-7, 5 KOs), a former Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) veteran, will face Rehm (6-5, 6 KOs) on Friday, Aug. 3, 2012 at the Twin River Event Center in the middleweight main event of Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment & Sports’ “Far Beyond Drive” mixed martial arts show.
Having trained and fought out of the Boston, Mass., area, Howard and Rehm have been friends, training partners and confidants for quite some time, so when CES first offered Rehm the opportunity to fight Howard, he sent his soon-to-be opponent a text message asking if he’d be willing to step inside the cage.
“I can’t wait,” Howard said. “We’re going to put on a show for the fans and have some fun.”
The two have leaned on one another for advice in the past, most notably in August of 2009 when Howard bumped into Rehm at his hotel the night before Howard defeated Tamdan McCrory by split decision at UFC 101 in Philadelphia.
“It was 2 a.m. and I was sneaking around in the hallways eating pizza,” he recalled. “Scott saw me, pulled me off to the side and said, ‘What are you doing? Get back in your room and go to sleep.’ So I did – and I won that fight.
“I’ve got nothing but respect for Scott. He’s been in the game a long time and has always given me good advice. That’s why I listened, and it’s a good thing I did.”
Providence’s Mike “The Beast” Campbell (10-4, 7 KOs), who’ll face Bombsquad veteran Don Carlo-Clauss (9-6, 3 KOs) of Ithica, N.Y., in the lightweight co-feature, won’t be nearly as cordial with his opponent tomorrow night. Carlo-Clauss clocked in at 2 ½ pounds over the lightweight limit of 155, infuriating Campbell, who hit 155 right on the nose.
“That just shows he’s not treating this professionally,” said Campbell, who hasn’t fought since beating Jeff Anderson in November. “He’s done this against other opponents before, and it hasn’t helped him. With that being said, I feel great.
“I lost 16 pounds in 12 hours. My weight cut was great. I feel good right now. I’m looking forward to kicking back tonight, feeling normal and doing what I do tomorrow.”
The undercard features Providence, R.I., native Ruben Rey (5-3, 5 KO) facing Sergio Moran Cabrera (1-0) of Boston in a three-round featherweight bout, and East Providence, R.I., bantamweight Dinis Paiva Jr. (1-3) will battle Framingham, Mass., native Gilvan Santos (1-3) in a three-round bout.
Tickets for “Far Beyond Driven” are $35.00, $55.00, $100.00 and $125.00 and can be purchased by calling CES at 401.724.2253/2254, online at www.cesmma.com or www.twinriver.com, at the Players Club booth at Twin River, or through any TicketMaster location. Doors open 6 p.m. with the first bout scheduled for 7.
Hector Sanchez (0-3) of Woonsocket, R.I., will battle newcomer Dave Maggiore of Framingham, Mass., in a welterweight bout; Johnston, R.I., and light heavyweight Joe Pingitore (1-0, 1 KO) will face newcomer Ahsan Abdullah of Cortland, N.Y.
Also on the undercard, Tyson Chartier (2-2) of Waltham, Mass., will face Wakefield, R.I., welterweight Tim O’Connell (4-4); welterweight Chris Cole (2-1) of Attleboro, Mass., will battle Robbie Leroux (3-1, 1 KO) of Fall River, Mass.; and Providence’s Theo Desjardin (3-5, 2 KOs) will face Billy Giovanella (1-0) of Bellingham in a flyweight bout. Bantamweight Joe Reverdes (0-2) of Providence will face newcomer Anthony Carmenetti of Boston in a three-round bout. All fights and fighters are subject to change.
(Twin River has waived its 18+ rule for “Far Beyond Driven.” Anybody under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult and must enter through the West entrance).
