Bellator FC 22 - Results

It took a while, but welterweight Ben Askren finally earned a Bellator win over somebody not named Ryan Thomas.

After two wins over Thomas, the former Olympic wrestler saved perhaps his best performance for last, and the 25-year-old ran roughshod over the formerly streaking Dan Hornbuckle en route to claiming Bellator's season-two welterweight tournament crown.

The win served as the featured contest in Wednesday's Bellator 22 event at the Kansas City Power & Light District in Kansas City. As with all Bellator events, the card aired nationally on FOX Sports Net.

As expected, Askren took the fight to the floor early. But where Hornbuckle had proved extremely dangerous on his back in recent fights, "The Handler" simply couldn't find room to utilize his wiry frame to attack. Instead, Askren was able to move to mount in each of the first two frames.

The final round saw the action again on the floor, and Hornbuckle fought valiantly to establish top position from a well-executed sweep. But as Hornbuckle looked to move to the back, Askren scrambled free and back to top position, effectively securing the shutout.

After 15 minutes, Askren was awarded the welterweight tournament title and the accompanying $100,000 bonus check with a unanimous-decision win, 30-27 on all three cards.

"I pretty much told all you guys what I was going to do," Askren said following the win. "A few of you were smart enough to listen to me. A bunch of you doubted me. You'll learn not to do that soon enough. Shame on you."

With the win, Askren (6-0 MMA, 3-0 BFC) remained undefeated in his young career and will now look to take on champion Lyman Good for the belt in season three.

"Lyman, keep my belt warm," Askren said. "Shine it once a week. Enjoy it while you can because it's mine, baby."

Meanwhile, Hornbuckle was classy in defeat and vowed a return trip.

"I'm an erector set," Hornbuckle (21-3 MMA, 2-1 BFC) said after losing for the first time since May 2008. "I keep building bigger and bigger and wider and wider.

"It don't matter. It's the fight game. It's what happens. Keep your head up and keep moving on. Bellator will see me again fo' sho."

Bellator newcomer Jose Vega provided the organization with another YouTube worthy clip just 39 seconds into his fight with Jarrod Card.

Vega pushed forward with his jab to open the fight. With Card backing away, Vega landed a leg kick and a right hand to the body before a massive left hook put Card to sleep on impact.

The powerful shot earned Vega (6-3 MMA, 1-0 BFC) his first-ever knockout win. The more-experienced Card (12-4-1 MMA, 1-0 BFC) sees a five-fight win streak snapped with the result.

The evening's first televised fight featured a one-sided light heavyweight affair. Raphael Davis walked through an early Demetrius Richards jab and slammed his foe to the floor. The end was already near.

Davis immediately took the back of Richards and launched a series of pounding attacks while looking for the rear-naked choke. An initial attempt was blocked, but Davis maintained the pressure with both his striking attack.

A few more shots softened up Richards' defense, and Davis blasted away until his opponent tapped from the strikes at the 2:51 mark of the first frame.

Davis (9-1 MMA, 1-0 BFC) has now won eight-straight contests, and all nine of his career wins have come via stoppage. Richards (5-3 MMA, 0-1 BFC) has now dropped two-straight fights.
