Superkombat World Grand Prix in Resita, Romania on April 12th


The 2014 season will start the World Grand Prix series on April 12th in Resita, Romania. During a press conference, Superkombat Fighting Championship president Eduard Irimia announced a light heavyweight (-85 kg) tournament, but also two MMA fights for the first time in the history of Superkombat. Assisted by The Mayor of the City of Resita, Mr. Mihai Stapanescu, also by the former three times world amateur boxing champion Francisc Vastag and the Romanian football legend Dorinel Munteanu, Eduard Irimia spoked about the event details.

“From this moment we will set up the card of the event. At the main-events of the night we will have Raul Catinas against Brice Guidon, and Catalin Morosanu, who is a true legend in Romania and he wil face a real beast from Egypt, Mohamed “Hulk” Karim, an MMA specialist. Also, we will have the usual four-man in one night tournament, but different from last year, this time will be at light heavyweight. We decided to develop also another division for tournaments as middleweight (-71 kg), super middleweight (-78 kg), cruiserweight (-91 kg) and super cruiserweight (-95 kg). Also, I want to announce our pilot edition with MMA fights, but in this moment only as undercard”, said Mr. Eduard Irimia.

In the first tournament of the year will compete Errol Koning (Suriname), Ciprian Schiopu (Romania), Noureddine Echiguer (Morocco) and Dawid Kasperski (Poland). If Koning, Kasperski and Echiguer will make their debut in Superkombat Fighting Championship, for Schiopu it’s the third time after he scored a loss and a win in last two bouts.

“It’s a big opportunity for our community to host such a big event as Superkombat World Grand Prix. We have also an agreement with Superkombat board so the full incomes from tickets sales will be donated to the Olympic Boxing Center from Resita, but also to some social cases. Fans from all Romania, but also from Serbia will visit our town with this occasion”, said Mr. Mihai Stapanescu.

The Municipality of Resita (73280 inhabitants), county seat of Caras-Severin which lies in the south-western part of Romania and is located in the north-west of the country, on the middle reach of Barzava river, in a geographical area of a picturesque landscape nesting appealing attractions. Resita is not only Romania’s oldest iron-and-steel industrial centre but also one of the most imposing industrial citadels of south-eastern Europe. As a touristic attraction, you can visit the Steam Engines Museum and Museum of the Mountainous Banat Region, but also landmarks in its surroundings (Secu Lake, Valiug Lake, Trei Ape Lake, Breazova Lake, Dognecea Lake, Caras Gorges, Semenic Mountain).

This will be the third Superkombat event of this year after the New Heroes event, held in Ploiest, Romania, two weeks ago, and the World Tryouts event, held last friday in Middlesbrough, United Kingdom.
