10 Questions With Ian McCall (by Darrick Patrick)

Ian McCall is a professional mixed martial artist who has competed in organizations such as World Extreme Cagefighting, Total Combat, Battle In The Ballroom, World Fighting Championships, Crown Fighting Championship, and Warriors Quest. At the time of this interview, his next scheduled match is against Dominick Cruz at WEC 38: Varner vs. Cerrone on January 25th, 2009.

Darrick: What was the journey that led you to professional mixed martial arts competition?

Ian: My journey started when I saw UFC 1 and I was hooked. I was a violent little kid and was always fighting the bigger kids or anyone else that decided to pick on me. I was really small, so I was an easy target. I started Kung Fu San Soo when I was really young, so I thought I was tough. (Laughs)

Darrick: Where could you possibly see the future of the sport ten years from now?

Ian: In ten years, I see the sport being as big as boxing is or maybe bigger. All of the athletes will be making the same kind of money boxers make and the public will be looking at it in a better light than most of them do now.

Darrick: Your next scheduled fight is against Dominick Cruz on January 25th. What are your thoughts about this upcoming match?

Ian: This fight has the makings of being a great one. It's a good fight for both of us and the winner will be that much closer to a title shot. I think a lot of people will be excited to see it.

Darrick: Who are some of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up?

Ian: Lots of family members, such as my parents and grandparents. My brother was always my best friend and he fought before me and before the sport got so big, so I always looked up to him. Once I hit high school, my wrestling coach was a huge influence to me and still is.

Darrick: What personally brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?

Ian: Hurting someone is always fun. Especially when you get paid to do it...and of course winning is the greatest feeling on Earth. I get to do what I love most in life as a job.

Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect?

Ian: Well, I respect just about everyone who fights unless they're a complete douche bag. There are so many good people in the sport. As far as skill goes though, I'm a huge B.J. Penn and St. Pierre fan - also guys like Fedor. Basically any extremely good guys really.

Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests?

Ian: I like food a lot, making fun of people is a good past time of mine, traveling, and chasing my girlfriend around in my birthday suit. (Laughs)

Darrick: What is your oldest memory?

Ian: Ummm...I think it's just being really young hanging out with my dad by the beach where I grew up.

Darrick: If you had three wishes, what would they be?

Ian: To have more money than Oprah's fat ass, to have powers like Wolverine, and to either be able to fly or be like the guys in that Jumper movie.

Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.

Ian: I have a third nipple.
