James Thompson to Face Jim York at Sengoku Seventh Battle
Fan favorite PRIDE and Cage Rage veteran James Thompson is slated to face Jim York at WVR's upcoming Sengoku Seventh Battle on March 20 in Tokyo.
Thompson (14-9) enters the bout on the heels of the highly controversial Strikebox/Titans Fighting debacle which saw his bout ruled a no contest after fans began rioting. Failed event aside, Thompson enters next month's bout on a three-fight losing streak.
After knocking out Don Frye in his finale PRIDE appearance, Thompson was knocked out by Neil Grove in only ten seconds in Cage Rage. He was then knocked out by Brett Rogers in Elite XC before appearing on CBS against Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson. Throughout a competitive bout which saw the best chin of Thompson's career, as well as a dominating second round, the fight was called after Ferguson landed a hail of punches to a still-standing Thompson. Also on display was Thompson's undrained cauliflower ear exploding in national television.
York (9-2) enters next month's bout coming off a loss to Yoshihiro Nakao in his Sengoku debut. Prior to his recent defeat York had been on a nine-fight win streak, including three in a row in MARS. In nine wins York has won four times by TKO and five times by submission.
The card, which will air on HDNet, will feature the first round of the promotion's featherweight tournament. Participants in the tournament include top ten ranked Hatsu Hioki and Hideki Kadowaki, as well as L.C. Davis and Nam Phan. The card also features a non-tournament bout between Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal and King of Pancrase Ryo Kawamura.
