British heavyweight fighter James Thompson is itching to square off with former WBC and IBF boxing champ Hasim Rahman who, according to dreamfighters.com, is reported to be interested in trying his hand at MMA.
Veteran slugger Thompson, 30, has been mooted as a potential opponent for Rahman by the American’s agent Sandros Gelke.
“We’re looking to fight name fighters like Kimbo [Slice], Eric “Butterbean” Esch, James Thompson – someone to bring a name to the table.
“I’m talking to a Strikeforce, a lot of big promotions. Some in Japan, like Sengoku and Dream. Hasim would love to fight over in Japan,” Gelke told sherdog.com.
And 18-stone Xtreme Couture member Thompson, who competed for PRIDE Fighting Championships in Japan, is hardly shying away from a potential showdown with The Rock, best known for knocking out Lennox Lewis in 2001.
Asked whether Rahman has the tools to make an impact in MMA, Thompson told me: “Lets find out!
“I’m well up for the fight!”
Revered in Japan for his infamous ‘gong and dash’, Thompson is set to make his return to the country on March 20 when he meets New Zealander Jim York at Sengoku 7.
