10 Questions With Darrell Montague (by Darrick Patrick)
Darrell "The Mongoose" Montague is a professional mixed martial artist who has appeared in organizations such as Gladiator Challenge, Long Beach Fight Night, Knights Of War, and Genuine Beatdown. At the time of this interview, his next scheduled match is against Maurice Eazel at Long Beach Fight Night 4 on April 19th, 2009.
Darrick: What was the road that led you to competing professionally in mixed martial arts?
Darrell Montague: My dad and I always watched boxing when I was younger, then one day he got some tapes of the first couple UFC events. Being the smallest kid in school, I loved seeing Royce Gracie beat up all of those huge dudes. Then, I started wrestling in high school and my buddies and I would also just throw on gloves to scrap with each other. I met Manny Tapia while wrestling, went to one of his fights, and knew I had to try it. So, I just started training.
Darrick: Who is someone in the sport that you highly respect?
Darrell Montague: I respect any fighter that gets in there and scraps. I don't think most people understand what really goes into fight preparation, so anyone who gets through a hard ass training camp deserves my respect. I think most fighters will agree that the fight is the fun part, or the reward, for all of the hard training.
Darrick: Your next scheduled fight is against Maurice Eazel on April 19th. What are your thoughts about this upcoming match?
Darrell Montague: All that I know about him is that he is a good wrestler that comes from a quality camp, so he'll probably be in good shape and will have a smart game plan. I just plan on doing what I always do, which is getting in there and fighting my ass off.
Darrick: Who are some of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up?
Darrell Montague: My mom and dad, but I deeply thank all of my trainers and training partners because they have always treated me like family. Who knows what kind of trouble I would have gotten into without them always there to support me or give me a nice kick in the ass when I needed one.
Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?
Darrell Montague: Hearing the crowd go crazy - I love to entertain.
Darrick: Do you have any words of advice for other individuals looking to train in MMA?
Darrell Montague: I'd say find a good gym and if fighting is something you really want to do, put in one hundred percent effort towards your training. If not, the guy across the ring from you probably did and you're more than likely going to get beat up pretty bad.
Darrick: Outside of mixed martial arts, what are your other interests?
Darrell Montague: Huh? There's a life outside of MMA? (Laughs) Just kidding. I mainly just enjoy hanging out with my buddies and trying to keep away from any trouble.
Darrick: What is your oldest memory?
Darrell Montague: I'm not sure about my oldest one, but some of my favorites were of visiting my dad. We would watch old boxing fights and he'd tell me about how much better boxing was back in the day.
Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.
Darrell Montague: I wear my lucky sweater to all of my fights.
Darrick: What comic book character do you relate to most?
Darrell Montague: I'd say Cyclops from the X-Men because he is a strong, silent leader and he also has trouble with the ladies. (Laughs)
