10 Questions With Lew Polley (by Darrick Patrick)
Lew "The Titan" Polley is a professional mixed martial artist who has appeared in organizations such as the International Fight League, Extreme Cage Combat, Absolute Fighting Championships, Xtreme Cage Wars, Ultimate Warrior Challenge, Kick Enterprises, Premier X-treme Fighting, Spirit Martial Challenge, Real Fighting Championships, and Pacific X-treme Combat,. At the time of this interview, his next scheduled match is against Vernon White at War Gods 5 on May 30th, 2009.
Darrick: What was the road that led you to professional mixed martial arts competition?
Lew: I wrestled a bit internationally after I had finished wrestling in college. I still wanted to compete, but I needed to make money and working as a town councilman was not for me. I had seen quite a few wrestlers becoming successful at mixed martial arts and thought that I was gifted enough to do it as well.
Darrick: In your experience so far, what brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?
Lew: The biggest joy that I get out of martial arts is the thrill of the build up and the release that comes with competition. I also enjoy the internal battle that comes with training that allows you to push through barriers and transform yourself into a totally different person.
Darrick: Your next scheduled fight is against Vernon White on May 30th. What are your thoughts about this upcoming match?
Lew: I feel very fortunate for this oppotunity. I have not fought in over a year and firmly believe everything happens for a reason. I think this is the comeback fight that will get me back on track. I respect Vernon very much and I know that he is well-known in the sport of MMA. I feel this match is tailor-made for my style and will allow me to showcase my ability.
Darrick: Who are some of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up?
Lew: My mother, my father, and my wrestling coaches.
Darrick: Any words of advice for other individuals looking to compete in MMA?
Lew: Always stay positive in the face of adversity. Greatness may take awhile to achieve, but that's why those individuals that achieve it are exceptional.
Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect?
Lew: Dan Lambert and Ricardo Liborio are really great people and they gave me tons of help when I started in MMA. Javier Mendez, Bob Cook, and Dave Camarillo because there are very few people in mixed martial arts who are as gracious and as welcoming as these guys are. Dan Henderson is one of the toughest guys in the sport and commands respect. He is also one of the coolest people you will ever meet.
Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests?
Lew: I like fishing, camping, going to the movies, and hanging out with friends.
Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.
Lew: I really enjoy art and expressive avenues such as films and music. I also enjoy philosophy.
Darrick: What is your oldest memory?
Lew: My dad coming home in his camos - he was in the Marine Corps.
Darrick: If you had three wishes, what would they be?
Lew: First off, I would like money and currency to be irrelevant. People let the pursuit of money alter their perception of reality which in turn alters their actions. Secondly, I would like the world to be filled with empathy and compassion. I believe that once you put yourself in someone else's shoes, you tend to understand more about where people are coming from. For the last one I would wish away pollution.
