We’re giving them an opportunity to fight on a professional show in front of passionate MMA fans. I’ve been in the promotional business most of my life and I love MMA like a lot of people I know. I’m happy we have one of the best MMA matchmakers in the business, Gary Marino, who is an encyclopedia of MMA.”
The co-feature matches IFL veteran Nate “The Future” Lamotte (10-4-0), of Manchester (NH), and dangerous Doug “Flash” Gordon (9-7-0). The Super Fight is between super heavyweights who both fought in the UFC, veteran Kevin “The Shamnan” Jordan (11-8-0) and pioneer Patrick Smith (16-13-0).

He represents Renzo Gracie NH, out of Derry (NH), where he earned a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to complement his boxing skills learned and developed in the Navy. Woody spent 4-years active duty in the Navy, including two stints fighting in the Iraq War on a ship, serving as a search-and-rescue swimmer and operations specialist.
“I was privileged to serve and the Navy matured me enough to handle MMA, plus I boxed in the Navy,” the Hillsboro County correction officer said. “I really want to put New Hampshire on the MMA map, big-time. Massachusetts has Kenny Florian and Joe Lauzon; Maine has Marcus Davis (all well known UFC fighters). I want to be like that for New Hampshire. When I go into the ring or cage, I bring the whole state with me.”
Weatherby has been an MMA fighter for five years, starting right out as a pro, and his fight against Everson is a classic match-up of contrasting style MMA fighters. “I’m now an established grappler,” Weatherby explained, “but I know I have good hands with knockout power in both. I like to ground-and-pound, too. But I’m a fighter who likes to brawl. He’s going to try and throw me down and then use his ground-and-pound game. My plan is to make it a stand-up fight and make him pay every time he shoots. I know I can submit him if we go down, but I won’t be surprised if he stands and I knock him out. He’s a good fighter and sometimes he likes to bang, but then he’ll try a takedown, like Matt Hughes’ style. I’ll make him eat a jab, right, and then another jab. When he comes in close,, I’ll use an uppercut. I hope he stands and fights.”

SALEM, New Hampshire (July 1, 2009) – UFC pioneer Patrick Smith was there at the beginning and 16 years later the ageless wonder is still going strong as he prepares to fight another UFC veteran, super heavyweight Kevin “The Shamnan” Jordan (11-8-0), in the Super Fight on American Steel Cagefighting’s (ASC) first professional mixed martial arts show, July 31 at the Icenter in Salem, New Hampshire.
Smith (16-13-0), now fighting out of Milburn, Oklahoma, was a UFC pioneer, losing a tough fight to Ken Shamrock in UFC1. He came back strong in UFC 2, winning three fights in a row, before eventually xlosing in the championship match to legendary Royce Gracie. Patrick’s most notable wins have been against Rudyard Moncayo in UFC6 and last year versus Eric “Butterbean” Esch.
Reflecting on his MMA career that Smith believes has taken off again, Patrick clearly is proud of where he’s been, as well as confident about where he’s headed. “I look at it and say, ‘Wow,’ because this sport is now the fastest growing in the country,” Patrick said. “I’m still here and doing very well. I’m more of an all-around fighter now, not just a good Muay Thai fighter and kick boxer. My body’s still good. (UFC president) Dana (White) keeps telling me to beat somebody more accomplished. I just beat Brad Imes in 28 seconds (TKO, March 13). I busted him up and did a lot of things to him in 28 seconds. I don’t know what more I can do. I’m outweighed by a lot every time I fight, but I’m still willing and able to fight anybody. Tim Sylvia, Chuck Lidell, Anderson Silva……they’re terrible strikers. They can’t hit me.”

ASC signs hot prospect Calvin Kattar for 9/11 MMA show

SALEM, New Hampshire (July 14, 2009) – Fledging mixed-martial-arts promotional company, American Steel Cagefighting’s (ASC), has signed one of the top MMA prospects on the East Coast, lightweight sensation Calvin Kattar, to fight on ASC’s
September 11th show at the Icenter in Salem, New Hampshire.
The 21-year-old Kattar (6-1), from Methuen (MA), will attend ASC inaugural pro show, headlined by Manchester welterweight Nate “The Future” Lamotte against Doug “Flash” Gordon, July 31 at the Icenter.
“I’m looking forward to putting on a great show 9/11,” Katar said. “(ASC co-promoter) Sal (LoNano) is a veteran and I know that show is special to him and a lot of other people. So far, everything has been great with ASC. I’m going to see all the action live on July 31. I know everyone has big expectations. They (ASC) have the right idea;
Sal came over from boxing, (matchmaker) Gary Marino knows MMA, and (co-promoter) Dave (Garofalo) is a very successful businessman. I’m excited about fighting on the 9/11 show. We’ll see how it goes and take it from there as far as other fights. They’re all good guys and I’m excited to be part of it. I can honestly tell you that they have already taken better care of me than other promoters who’ve put on shows around here.”
Kattar, who now lives in Andover, was a wrestling star at Methuen High. He took a break from college after one semester and realized he missed the competition he had from wrestling. After watching his sister’s friend, Dave George, in an MMA fight, Calvin immediately decided that he wanted to be an MMA fighter and did so. Now based out of Premier Martial Arts in Derry (NH), Kattar made his pro MMA debut after only six months of training, and now the sky appears to be the limit for this popular fighter.
Despite his strong wrestling background, Calvin would prefer to stay on his feet and strike. “I remember feeling after a loss in high school that, if I could have punched my opponent in the face,” Kattar explained, “I would have won. This sport allows me to do that. I prefer to fight on my feet, but I’ve gone to the ground twice, and won by both times by submission.”
Kattar is a natural athlete who has the potential to become an MMA version of boxer “Irish” Micky Ward, who LoNano successfully managed for several years, especially in his Merrimack Valley home base. “I really think we might have a new Micky Ward here,” LoNano remarked. “I see a lot of Micky – his heart, dedication to training and determination – in Calvin. He is the top fighter, MMA or boxing, in the Merrimack Valley area, arguably the best MMA prospect in New England, possibly on the entire East Coast. He can really put on a show. Having him in the main event on our Sept. 11th show is huge for our new company. ASC will show him how we treat fighters and we hope that after his Sept. 11 fight, he’ll sign with us for a series of fights. Calvin Kattar has the whole package to go to the top of the MMA world.”
“Gary Marino is our matchmaker,” Garofalo noted. “It’s his job to scout and recruit talent in New England. He and Sal getting Calvin to sign with us was a grand slam. We’re all very excited about him headlining our September 11th show. I’ve been an MMA fan since UFC1 and I believe Calvin’s going to be a star.”

Lamotte-Gordon headline July 31 debut show at Icenter in Salem, New Hampshire
SALEM, New Hampshire (July 14, 2009) – Fledging mixed-martial-arts promotional company, American Steel Cagefighting’s (ASC), has signed one of the top MMA prospects on the East Coast, lightweight sensation Calvin Kattar, to fight on ASC’s
September 11th show at the Icenter in Salem, New Hampshire.
The 21-year-old Kattar (6-1), from Methuen (MA), will attend ASC inaugural pro show, headlined by Manchester welterweight Nate “The Future” Lamotte against Doug “Flash” Gordon, July 31 at the Icenter.
“I’m looking forward to putting on a great show 9/11,” Katar said. “(ASC co-promoter) Sal (LoNano) is a veteran and I know that show is special to him and a lot of other people. So far, everything has been great with ASC. I’m going to see all the action live on July 31. I know everyone has big expectations. They (ASC) have the right idea;
Sal came over from boxing, (matchmaker) Gary Marino knows MMA, and (co-promoter) Dave (Garofalo) is a very successful businessman. I’m excited about fighting on the 9/11 show. We’ll see how it goes and take it from there as far as other fights. They’re all good guys and I’m excited to be part of it. I can honestly tell you that they have already taken better care of me than other promoters who’ve put on shows around here.”
Kattar, who now lives in Andover, was a wrestling star at Methuen High. He took a break from college after one semester and realized he missed the competition he had from wrestling. After watching his sister’s friend, Dave George, in an MMA fight, Calvin immediately decided that he wanted to be an MMA fighter and did so. Now based out of Premier Martial Arts in Derry (NH), Kattar made his pro MMA debut after only six months of training, and now the sky appears to be the limit for this popular fighter.
Despite his strong wrestling background, Calvin would prefer to stay on his feet and strike. “I remember feeling after a loss in high school that, if I could have punched my opponent in the face,” Kattar explained, “I would have won. This sport allows me to do that. I prefer to fight on my feet, but I’ve gone to the ground twice, and won by both times by submission.”
Kattar is a natural athlete who has the potential to become an MMA version of boxer “Irish” Micky Ward, who LoNano successfully managed for several years, especially in his Merrimack Valley home base. “I really think we might have a new Micky Ward here,” LoNano remarked. “I see a lot of Micky – his heart, dedication to training and determination – in Calvin. He is the top fighter, MMA or boxing, in the Merrimack Valley area, arguably the best MMA prospect in New England, possibly on the entire East Coast. He can really put on a show. Having him in the main event on our Sept. 11th show is huge for our new company. ASC will show him how we treat fighters and we hope that after his Sept. 11 fight, he’ll sign with us for a series of fights. Calvin Kattar has the whole package to go to the top of the MMA world.”
“Gary Marino is our matchmaker,” Garofalo noted. “It’s his job to scout and recruit talent in New England. He and Sal getting Calvin to sign with us was a grand slam. We’re all very excited about him headlining our September 11th show. I’ve been an MMA fan since UFC1 and I believe Calvin’s going to be a star.”

The Manchester trio of fighters has so much going on together that there’s enough of a storyline for a legitimate television reality show. In addition to all three fighting in the welterweight division and being the same height, they’re also roommates in Manchester, wrestled in Manchester-area high schools at the same time, train at Team Burgess in Manchester, and each is 25 years old (within a month of each other’s birthdays). They will also be working each other’s corners July 31st.
“We’re mirror images of each other,” Lamotte explained. “We all love it. The best thing is fighting on the same card with my two roommates and best friends. We grew-up together. Ryan was co-captain with me in high school (Manchester Memorial) and Adam went to West Manchester. We train and cut weight together. I’m co-owner of Team Burgess (MMA studio). Sometimes it gets a little goofy when we’re losing weight, so we just go over there to train, even if it’s at 1 in the morning. And we always have somebody to run with. I’ll be right in the corner for Ryan and Adam. I can’t help it; I have to be there. They’ll be in my corner, too.”

Gordon wins in a “Flash”
SALEM, New Hampshire (July 31, 2009) – Veteran Doug “Flash” Gordon (10-7-0) stunned local favorite Nate “The Future” Lamotte (10-5-0), of Manchester (NH), to win the main event last night in American Steel Cagefighting’s (ASC) inaugural mixed martial arts show at the Icenter in Salem, New Hampshire.
Lamotte tapped out at 2:01 of the first round, when Gordon locked in a guillotine choke. “I didn’t really set it up,” Gordon remarked. “He just gave it to me. It was a good fight, though. He was strong but I had such a will. I came back strong.”
In the co-main event, New York lightweight Pat Audinwood (8-0-0) remained unbeaten, using a triangle choke to force veteran “Mr. Big” Al Buck (6-8-0), former Cage Fury Fighting champion, into submission in the opening round. “It was awesome,” Audinwood said. “I want to thank Al Buck. It’s tough getting good opponents like him.”

ASC is co-owned by David Garofalo and Sal LoNano. Garofalo is the proprietor of Two Guys Smoke Shop, in Salem (NH), one of the world’s highest volume independently owned cigar retailer. LoNano, who managed professional boxers “Irish” Micky Ward and former world light welterweight champion Paulie “Magic Man” Malignaggi, owns S & L Boxing, which has promoted numerous nationally televised pro boxing shows. Gary Marino is the ASC matchmaker.
